Tonight we leave on expedition to one of my all-time favorite wilderness areas on the planet. My first time in Gabon was twelve years ago and it made a big impact on me. It re-calibrated my understanding of wilderness and I believe it’s what clarified the path for what I wanted to do with my life. It’s a place that is built for adventure - there aren’t many places left that require you to relax into the unknown quite like Gabon does.

We’ll be exploring Loango Nat Park for the next two weeks looking for a wide variety of species but also to experience its incredible sense of Place.

I can’t wait to share what it has to offer us this time. Be in touch again soon…

•TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE•

The Serengeti Girls Run is an annual event where women come from around the world to run 63km through the Serengeti in support of women’s empowerment for the Grumeti region of Tanzania.

The money raised goes to funding 80 girls through either their school, vocational or tertiary studies each year, giving 5000 girls pads so they can attend school with dignity throughout the month, educating both girls and boys about ending female ge***al mutilation and mentorship programs to give girls a sense of what is possible for them so they’re encouraged away from early marriage and unwanted pregnancies.

It is so touching to see women come from as far as Australia, the UK, the USA and South Africa because they believe in the future of these young women and want the best for them! I was so inspired by the inspirational stories and awesome attitudes of all of these women, each with a deep desire to support other women to their full potential!

So far and I have raised $29 000 of our $30 000 target. LINK IN BIO if you’d like to help support these girls and get us the rest of the way there.

Reach out if you’re interested in running this next year and would like more info!

A recent capture from one of my favorite gorilla treks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. This youngster is just 6 months old and we watched it suckle, play, snuggle and sleep; never once leaving its mother’s protective embrace. It’s always a little startling just how familiar they feel.

In just a few weeks we head off to explore Zambia!

This is Kutali Camp, one of the camps we’ll be staying at in the Lower Zambezi along with two other stops in Kafue and South Luangwa.

Kutali Camp is located under a stunningly cool winterthorn forest on the secluded, private Kulefu Island in the remote eastern sector of the park. Arguably the prettiest camp location in Zambia combines with a great variety of safari activities. Kulefu Island offers amazing canoeing, walking and boating possibilities and is just a river crossing away from mainland for game drives.

We love that this camp offers all the comfort you need, whilst keeping you close to the surrounding wilderness!

We are itching to get here!

29/04/2022

Birds are a reminder of our ancient past. They are living dinosaurs and carry with them codes of an evolutionary history from which we have all emerged. Aldo Leopold writes the following in relation to cranes but it is true of all birds; “our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language. The quality of cranes lies, I think, in this highest gamut, as yet beyond the reach of words.

This much, though, can be said: our appreciation of the crane grows with the slow unraveling of earthly history. His tribe, we now know, stems out of the remote Eocene. The other members of the fauna in which he originated are long since entombed within the hills. When we hear his call we hear no mere bird. He is the symbol of our untamable past, of that incredible sweep of millennia which underlies and conditions the daily affairs of birds and men.”

To have an interest in birds goes beyond a mere ticking or recording of individuals but an appreciation of our very history on this planet.

A safari isn’t all about the animals.

Oftentimes the most impactful moments come from a sense of wilderness; from how it is that EVERYTHING fits together to form the whole.

It’s in the silence, in the darkness, in the solitude and company of a fire at a river’s edge that everything makes more sense.

NATURE HEALS LONELINESS:

A recent study published in the Guardian has found that nature in cities significantly reduces feelings of loneliness, according to a team of scientists.

The research found that feelings of overcrowding increased loneliness by an average of 39%. But when people were able to see trees or the sky, or hear birds, feelings of loneliness fell by 28%. Feelings of social inclusion also cut loneliness by 21%, and when these feelings coincided with contact with nature the beneficial effect was boosted by a further 18%. (Follow link in bio for how they came to these results).

“Time spent in nature is known to boost wellbeing, with woodland walks estimated to save the UK at least £185m a year in mental health costs, for example. Natural places in cities could reduce loneliness by enhancing feelings of belonging to a place, or by providing more opportunity to socialise”, the researchers said.

What we believe this also shows is that nature is part of our community! We need it in order to feel whole, happy and healthy.

It’s great that the important of this is being recognized in urban environments but imagine the impacts on well being when you are totally immersed in a pristine wilderness system. Follow the link in bio to see what experiences we recommend for your well being!

PAFURI ART RETREAT
21-25 July 2022

THE EXPERIENCE
In Pafuri, humans have been creating art since we first began evolving there 2,5 million years ago. From the making of tools, pottery, cave paintings, primitive musical instruments and clothing from animal skins our ancestors have been honing their creative skill for countless generations. Some say, it is this very thing that makes us human. Every one of us is an artist – it is written in our DNA. The way we dress, the words we choose, the songs we hum under our breath and the thoughts we have are all modern examples of the ancient joy in producing art that is alive within us today.

The intention behind this safari is to re-awaken this. We aim to notice Art in Nature and to let it inspire us, to tap our innate creativity and to practice Art as a way of Being.

On this retreat we forget about the end result and become enamoured with the process. It’s all about sharing and enjoying the creative process together as a tribe of artists (*ABSOLUTELY NO ‘TRADITIONAL’ ART SKILL REQUIRED*).

WHO IS THIS RETREAT AIMED AT?
Those looking to tap their creativity, interact with nature in novel ways and have a little fun. A medium level of fitness is required. Absolutely no level of traditional artistic skill required.

RETREAT CONTENT
– Daily morning and evening guided walks with immersive art workshops interspersed.
– Evening game drive and sundowners.
– Nature art workshops using found natural materials for ephemeral explorations of colour, shape and form.
– Expressive mark-making with natural materials and journal binding.
– Fun practices to re-awaken your capacity to see art in nature.
– A visit to ancient San Bushman paintings.
– Sharing our stories around the fire, under the Milky Way.
– Free middays to relax, swim in the river, read, sleep.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is abundant in space. During the summer months, the sporadic thunderstorms transform the arid landscape and it explodes to life. The only thing that seems to be missing are humans. It was only on our fifth day in the second largest game reserve on the planet that we saw another vehicle! A truly remarkable place.

We’ve just returned from Little Sable, a camp, in the Khwai Private Reserve. It’s mind blowing that we were the only guests in a 200,000-hectare area of pristine wilderness in the Greater Okavango Delta region.

The reserve is bordered by Moremi to the south, Savuti to the north and the Khwai Community Reserve to the east – in the middle of some of the most famous and iconic game-viewing areas on the continent.

Vast floodplains and sprawling grasslands meet patches of forested enclaves, and through it all runs an intricate network of channels and lily-filled waterways. Recent game counts claim that some 250 000 large mammals are supported in this intricate ecosystem and we certainly saw plenty of it.

Now is the time to travel as vast wilderness areas that typically have a low visitor density anyway are pretty much sole-use currently. That kind of space with no human presence is the privilege of a lifetime.

We look forward to sharing the stories over the coming weeks.

Kicking the year off with a bang!

Tomorrow we leave for Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana - the homeland of the Bushmen for about 30 000 years. It is believed just to its East, the Makgadikgadi Pans, are were modern humans first arose 200 000 years ago. An ancient and vast place, largely devoid of any human influence but teaming with wildlife during these summer months. We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the next week welcoming in the new year!

A crash of rhinos . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“It is a century since Darwin gave us the first glimpse of the origin of species. We know now what was unknown to all the preceding caravan of generations: that men are only fellow-voyagers with other creatures in the odyssey of evolution. This new knowledge should give us, by this time, a sense of kinship with fellow-creatures; a wish to live and let live; a sense of wonder over the magnitude of durations of biotic enterprise. Above all we should, in the century since Darwin, have come to know that man, while now captain of the adventuring ship, is hardly the sole object of its quest, and that his prior assumptions to this effect arose from the simple necessity of whistling in the dark.” - A Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In just over two weeks we’ll be back exploring the five million-hectare Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Africa, occupying a significant swathe of the middle of Botswana.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Central Kalahari is a vast expanse of scrub-covered fossil dunes between ancient river valleys. During the rains (Nov-April), the desert comes to life, with huge herds of plains game followed by predators large and small, resulting in some of the best summer wildlife viewing in Botswana.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
