Cheradon Adventure Resort Gapyear Destination A gap year destination in South Africa offering a range of adventure activities and horse riding while putting something back into the community.

Cher-a-Don Gap-year opportunity is geared to enthusiastic volunteers 18 years and older who want to spend time in South Africa where they can make a difference to a child’s life, this is not a “feed a child in Africa” scheme but rather help us to give the tools our youth need so they can become productive members of society. This is a home-away from-home environment where the volunteers stay in a

cottage attached to our home, eat their meals with us and during the day are our other pair of hands. We are situated on a farm in the Eastern Cape near the village of Port Alfred, halfway between East London and Port Elizabeth at a teambuilding adventure centre. We cater for large groups, churches, clubs, corporate and schools, there are however a large number of youth that would benefit from the experience and cannot afford to pay, yet they are the youth most at risk to drink, drugs and the gangs and most likely be sucked into a life of crime. Help us reach the youth before the gangs do. Different activities are used depending on the objective and motivation of the teambuilding for that day, age of group, group size and time available. Abseiling, rappelling, rock climbing, kloofing, obstacle course, canoeing, raft building, orienteering, hiking, bird watching & environmental exploring, icebreaker activities, Volleyball, netball and a field for football fun team relaxation. There are literally hundreds of teambuilding activities that can be used to achieve different objectives and outcomes. We also have an equine centre and a close working relationship with a horse trail company operating on the coastline of the Sunshine Coast. The volunteers have the opportunity to lend their equine skills and learn new ones as an equine volunteer only working with the horses or they could be involved with the children at the camp and take advantage of the adventure activities and ride. What ever they decide they want to be involved in, the volunteers daily rate covers their costs and contributes towards underprivileged youth who would not be in the position to pay for a camp. Volunteers can stay with us for any period from two weeks to 6 months, starting on the 1st of every month. For every month they are with us their daily rate will include a two-day horse trail on the Sunshine Coast. Any other “trip” they would like to do such as a game drive; a boat trip up the river or an elephant ride can be organized at an extra cost with other companies in their days off. The day starts after breakfast at 730 and ends at 5 with an hour off for lunch, but as no two days are the same the volunteers may find that the hours will change slightly with extra free time to compensate.

Hi all. Great news!!! We are in the processing of relocating to a 780 h farm between Port Alfred and Grahamstown along the Sunshine Coast of South Africa, so both Mkulu Kei Horses and Cher-a-Don Adventure Centre have a new home. It’s been 18 months in the planning, we needed all the ducks in a row and when it happened it happened fast. Unfortunately we will not be making any more tack as Don will be focussing on other things for the time being. Once we signed for the farm the next day we started trucking the 250kms everyday, moving 36 horses, 4 dogs, 6 cats, Mkulu Kei equipment, the adventure centre equipment, the MK Saddlery machinery and the household. It was always going to be a mission but, we did it in 7 days! Loading and off loading in the dark and storing everything in a shed as I can we can only move into the houses on the farm in two months time. In the mean time we are renting a cottage in the holiday village of Bushmans. My biggest concern was the wild horses, yet they all ran into the truck, so boxing the horses was easier than we expected and they are all now very happy, settled and will never manage to eat all the grazing on the farm, even before we begin bush clearing. Loading the equipment was a nightmare as I am sure the stuff kept multiplying and seemed to be never ending. We really were extremely lucky as our tow bar fractured off the chassis of the one bakkie at the new farm’s gate on the second last load. I have to say we were being looked after, as it could have happened while we were en route either with the last two horses in the horse box or while I or someone else was travelling behind the loaded trailer which would have been deadly.
The idea is to build an equine and teambuilding adventure centre equipped to accommodate large groups and we plan to increase the number of underprivileged or “at risk youth” that we previously worked with. It is going to be lots and lots of hard work but the end result is going to be stunning: two areas of dormitories with ablutions, dining area and central kitchen, camping site amongst game along the river and against the mountain ridge. We will have several abseiling courses, various dams for activities, obstacle course, low and high wire activities, equine assisted learning and arenas for both schooling and jumping as well as horse and mountain bike cross country courses.
Volunteers will be accommodated in our home, with two large dormitory style bedrooms, a large entertainment area and they will take all meals with us as before. A swimming pool with deck and both a braai and a pizza oven area is planned in the near future. Volunteers this is a stunning opportunity for you to ride and work with the horses and/or help with camps. We really need every pair of hands we can get and the more we can do, the more youth we will be able to help.
Internet is limited at the moment so please be patient but there will more news and pictures to follow.

Very clever.
