Cher-a-Don Gap-year opportunity is geared to enthusiastic volunteers 18 years and older who want to spend time in South Africa where they can make a difference to a child’s life, this is not a “feed a child in Africa” scheme but rather help us to give the tools our youth need so they can become productive members of society. This is a home-away from-home environment where the volunteers stay in a
cottage attached to our home, eat their meals with us and during the day are our other pair of hands. We are situated on a farm in the Eastern Cape near the village of Port Alfred, halfway between East London and Port Elizabeth at a teambuilding adventure centre. We cater for large groups, churches, clubs, corporate and schools, there are however a large number of youth that would benefit from the experience and cannot afford to pay, yet they are the youth most at risk to drink, drugs and the gangs and most likely be sucked into a life of crime. Help us reach the youth before the gangs do. Different activities are used depending on the objective and motivation of the teambuilding for that day, age of group, group size and time available. Abseiling, rappelling, rock climbing, kloofing, obstacle course, canoeing, raft building, orienteering, hiking, bird watching & environmental exploring, icebreaker activities, Volleyball, netball and a field for football fun team relaxation. There are literally hundreds of teambuilding activities that can be used to achieve different objectives and outcomes. We also have an equine centre and a close working relationship with a horse trail company operating on the coastline of the Sunshine Coast. The volunteers have the opportunity to lend their equine skills and learn new ones as an equine volunteer only working with the horses or they could be involved with the children at the camp and take advantage of the adventure activities and ride. What ever they decide they want to be involved in, the volunteers daily rate covers their costs and contributes towards underprivileged youth who would not be in the position to pay for a camp. Volunteers can stay with us for any period from two weeks to 6 months, starting on the 1st of every month. For every month they are with us their daily rate will include a two-day horse trail on the Sunshine Coast. Any other “trip” they would like to do such as a game drive; a boat trip up the river or an elephant ride can be organized at an extra cost with other companies in their days off. The day starts after breakfast at 730 and ends at 5 with an hour off for lunch, but as no two days are the same the volunteers may find that the hours will change slightly with extra free time to compensate.
