Being the second largest big cat in the world and the only cats that live in groups, lions have a fearsome and majestic reputation.

Found in the savannah grasslands and open plains of Africa, the best place to see Lions in the wild is in the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands in South Africa.

: African wild dogs are team players. They rally each other up with excitement before each hunt. The smart endurance hunters spread out in a line to cover a fair amount of ground and then approach their prey singling out vulnerable animals. Some of the dogs run close to the prey while the others fall behind. They then take over when the front members tire.
After a few kilometres, the prey becomes exhausted and is easily taken down by the pack.

: Despite their name, black rhino are grey in colour and have a smaller stature than that of the white rhino. With less of a pronounced hump on the back of their necks, black rhino also have a smaller head. Unlike white rhino grazers, the black rhino are browsers, eating from higher bushes or trees, requiring less muscle strength around their necks. Black rhinos have a hooked lip, as opposed to a flat-based lip, which is adapted to their different eating habits.

: Elephants are incredibly intelligent animals, capable of showing emotion and remembering information. The friendly giants are sadly endangered due to being poached for their tusks, valuable in the ivory trade.
This trade is illegal today, but has not been completely eliminated. African Bush Elephants are also victims of conflict with local people as these giants have to travel further to seek food and water where habitat loss has affected their living.

Frequently Asked Questions

How safe is going on safari?

While there is an inherent risk travelling on safari and in Africa, it is no more dangerous than travelling anywhere else in the world. You will be in wildlife rich areas most of the time you are on safari and will come into relatively close contact with wild animals.

The camps are, however, safe and the guides that will be accompanying you are professionally trained and suitably qualified. Very good medical air rescue services are available and the camps and lodges are in good radio contact with them at all times.

: Giraffe necks, at 1.8m long, cannot reach the ground – they therefore spread their front legs wide in order to reach down for a drink of water.
Their long necks do however serve them well in reaching for the tree-tops when eating. Giraffe tongues and lips are tough and well adapted to allow them to forage on thorny trees such as acacias.

- African wild dogs are highly social, living in packs of six to twenty individuals with a dominant breeding pair. They communicate through a variety of vocalizations, movements and touch.
African wild dogs are nomads and wanderers with vast territories. In the Serengeti the estimated size of each pack’s territory is 1,500 km2. An area the size of Greater London, which is home to 7.5 million people, could therefore only support one or two African wild dog packs.

: These amazing prehistoric looking animals are a highlight of any safari experience. The white rhinoceros is the second largest land mammal in the world, after the elephant. Sadly there are only five species of rhino which are all endangered, after once having been over 30 species.
A rhino’s lifespan can be up to 50 years.
