West Rand Tourism Western side of Gauteng meandering along the Crocodile River. Filled with activities of adventure, tranquility and shopping. The destination with purpose

The West Rand’s heritage, dating millions of years, attracts visitors from across the globe. The unspoilt wilderness is protected by legislation and is carefully managed to preserve both historic and ecological legacies. The Witwatersrand (Ridge of White Waters) is 1 760m above sea level. The area provides the largest inland water system in South Africa with rain water flowing into both the Indian

and Atlantic oceans. The Witwatersrand Sequence is a combination of gold bearing quartzite and shale. Two of the earliest gold mines in South Africa can be visited at Kromdraai and Magaliesburg, where guided tours reveal the lives of these early pioneers. Gold mining is the backbone of the South African economy, with most mining centred in Gauteng. Soft dolomite has led to the earliest evidence of the discovery of man, and to the declaration of the Cradle of Humankind as a World Heritage Site. The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) comprises of four local municipalities, namely Randfontein, Mogale City, Westonaria and Merafong City.

Bookings for Run the Rhenoster are now open! Join it on Sunday, 4th June 2023.

Once a year, the borders to the Crocodile River Reserve open up for you to take a scenic trail run or walk through this beautiful landscape just 20 minutes from Fourways. Run the Rhenoster is a one-day trail run through the western side of the Crocodile River Reserve. Runners can discover the beauty of the reserve and the many secrets it hides, from the mystery of Pelindaba rock to the first panned gold in the old Transvaal. The routes snake through beautiful single trails and quiet district roads and along the tranquil Small Crocodile River. Fantastic views of Koppie Alleen, Rhenosterkop and Vlakfontein.

(Waaigras, where we live, is part of the Crocodile River Reserve which lies south of the Schurveberg range, and where Gauteng's three main rivers flow - the Hennops and the Jukskei - which join the Crocodile River on its way to the Hartbeespoort Dam.)
