Isandlwana (meaning the second stomach of a cow).

This geological feature in northern Zululand, resembling, apparently, a portion of bovine anatomy, received ultimate notoriety on 22 January 1879, when the British Army suffered its worst and most humiliating defeat of the Victorian era at the hands of the Zulu impi on and around Isandlwana.

Following the invasion of Zululand by the British Army, King Cetshwayo dispatched some 24,000 Zulu impi from Ulundi on 17 January 1879. They crossed the White Umfolozi River and passed through the convoluted hills and valleys of what is today Babanango Game Reserve - undetected by British scouts - and following the King's command to "March slowly, attack at dawn and eat up the red soldiers."

The British command severely underestimated the Zulus' resolve and capabilities and were largely unprepared for the attack on the 22nd at their encampment below Isandlwana.

Despite their Martini Henry breechloading rifles and some 7-pounder cannons, the Zulu impi, armed with short stabbing spears (iklwa), and their cowhide shields overran the British contingent leaving very few survivors.

Those who have a deep interest in Anglo-Zulu history and the battle of Isandlwana have said that the Zulu impi would have, during their march from Ulundi, crested the very plateau from which I captured this image (at around 1200m on Babanango Game Reserve) and would have seen Isandlwana for the first time, some 45 km distant.

Northwest of Isandlwana, in the far distance, lies the Buffalo River and Rorke's Drift.

Today you will get to hear from Theo, one of our resident guides at Zulu Rock Lodge. This is what he has to say:

"The lodge location itself is marvelous, built on granite boulders, and the magnificent views of the White Umfolozi river, which guests enjoy from their private chalets. The sunset views from the deck of the main area is a guest favourite. It is the perfect spot for sundowner drinks, where guests can gather to enjoy the fire and star gazing after sunset. The night fall is accompanied by lovely wildlife calls of jackals, night jars, crickets and other lovely sounds of the bush.

At Zulu Rock Lodge, even if you skip your game drives, you still stand a good chance of enjoying game viewing from the comfort of your room, from the deck or in the main area. Elephants have been seen crossing the grassy plains not far from the lodge and rhinos grazing. At the lodge itself you will likely see zebras, inyala, kudu and other general game, not forgetting to mention our feathered friends. Their calls will wake you up in the morning, reminding you to get up and watch the beautiful light of the sunrise filtering through the natural vegetation. You can enjoy the variety of bird calls from the likes of Buff-streaked chats, Shelly's francolin, Blue cranes (depending on season) and many others."
