‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️Tourism Sector
Dear Colleagues,

I trust this email finds you well.

On behalf of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA), please share the following message with your stakeholders to participate in the Free Grading Promotion, set for February 2025, in preparation for the 2025 G20 Summit. This initiative, led by TGCSA, aims to onboard ungraded properties into the grading system, significantly boosting the number of high-quality, internationally recognised establishments in South Africa.

As the G20 Summit draws near, showcasing world-class accommodation is essential. With thousands of global leaders, delegates, and media attending, ensuring a strong portfolio of graded properties is crucial to positioning South Africa as a premier tourism destination.

Eligibility Criteria:

This promotion targets new and lapsed properties—those that have never been graded or whose previous grading expired before February 2022. Eligible establishments will receive free grading if they meet the required statutory and grading criteria. Establishments will be required to submit their applications for grading through the TGCSA website (www.tourismgrading.co.za) in order to be considered for inclusion in the promotion. Their grading membership will be valid for a period of one (1) year.

Application Process:

Prospective members will need to possess the following statutory requirements to be eligible for grading and this promotion:

Registration as a business with the provincial authority and/or municipality;
Public liability insurance;
Compliance with local authority regulations (municipal by-laws, zoning, etc);
Health and safety certificate (fire and building regulations); and
Liquor license (where applicable);

Why Grading Matters for G20:

The 2025 G20 Summit presents a unique opportunity for South Africa to shine on the global stage. The influx of international visitors demands a robust and quality-assured accommodation offering, which can only be guaranteed through the TGCSA grading system.

Grading will help:

Ensure World-Class Standards: Graded properties guarantee quality, comfort, and service for G20 delegates and visitors.
Enhance Global Perception: A larger pool of graded establishments positions South Africa as a top-tier tourism destination.
Meet G20 Demand: With high visitor numbers expected, it’s vital to have enough graded properties to accommodate international guests.

The Free Grading Promotion Virtual Sessions:

TGCSA launched the Free Grading Promotion for the month of February 2025 only and a virtual session will be held, to provide essential information on the free grading process and its benefits for businesses. The sessions will be held as follows:

Date: 13 February 2025

*MEDIA STATEMENT: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

TO: ALL MEDIA

DATE: 13 DECEMBER 2024

*MEC BENTLEY VASS ENCOURAGES OWNERS OF SMALL BUSINESSES, SPAZA SHOPS AND OTHER FOOD HANDLING CONVENIENT STORES TO REGISTER THEIR BUSINESSES BY THE DEADLINE OF 17 DECEMBER 2024.*

MEC Bentley Vass responsible for COGHSTA, Transport, Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape, encourages all owners of small businesses, spaza shops, and other food handling convenient stores across the Northern Cape, to register their businesses by the set deadline of Tuesday, 17 December 2024.

This deadline follows the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the 15th November 2024. The counting of 21 days started on Monday, 18 November 2024 considering that Municipal offices are closed on weekends and public holidays.

MEC Vass has applauded business owners that have already approached their municipalities across the Province, to register their businesses, in line with the announcement by President Ramaphosa. He further called on municipalities to expedite all related processes, post the submission of applications by businesses.

The process of registration that is being undertaken does not include the whole process of licensing of a business, which is the application, review, approval and the issuance of the license or a permit to trade.

MEC Vass said, ‘’If one missed the registration window, it is important to note that the business cannot operate, and it must be closed down. Following the current process of registration, applicants are expected to receive an acknowledgement of their application. This will then be followed by a process of verification and inspection, as well as other statutory compliance requirements by relevant units such as Environmental Health, National Consumer Commission etc.’’

It is also important to emphasise that a foreign national can only register or apply for a business license if they have a business visa, an asylum seeker certificate or a refugee certificate. Furthermore, a foreign national with a work, study or tourist visa is not permitted to apply for a business license or operate a business in the country.

South Africans, who are landlords, are also prohibited by law, not to register businesses on behalf of illegal foreign nationals. Any South African who has been found to have fraudulently registered a business on behalf of an illegal foreign national will face the might of the Law.

The multi-disciplinary inspections to strengthen adherence to legal frameworks governing trade and food safety across the Northern Cape Province, will continue beyond the prescribed period of 21 days. The government remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding public safety and preventing future outbreaks through sustainable practices and partnerships.
