Santie Gouws Mountain Walking Guide Santie offers guided Mountain & Fynbos hiking experiences on Table Mountain and the Boland Mountains

Santie has hiked Mountains in South Africa and across the globe for the last 30 years since her student years in the 1990's at Stellenbosch, a university town surrounded by Mountains. December 2019 saw her on a 117 km, 10 day solo unsupported hike across the magnificent Reunion island, crossing both Piton des Neiges, at 3070 m the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, and the Piton de la Fournaise vol

cano. On the last day, after 2 days of monsoon rain, she found herself stuck between two over-full rivers... not able to carry on ... another 2 nervous days later she was airlifted out by helicopter, ...an experience which changed her life and lead her to resign from a 25 year civil engineering career to follow her destiny...

Passionate about fynbos, she returned home and pursued the protection and restoration of an iconic fynbos species, Serruria Florida - Pride of Franschhoek - or Blushing Bride, critically endangered in the wild, and established a volunteer restoration project, https://www.friendsofthebride.org/

Her love of hiking the fynbos-clad Mountains of the Western Cape also turned her into an active Citizen Scientist on iNaturalist, a global internet-based research database of observations of wild fauna and flora, freely populated via phone-app by volunteers. To date she has already contributed 6900 observations, as such recording over 1230 individual fynbos species as she comes across them on her hikes. https://www.inaturalist.org/people/dryfveer

Qualifiying in March 2022, she is a Registered Adventure Guide for off-trail overnight hiking in South Africa, reg nr WC13274. She also currently serves as Chairlady of the Stellenbosch Branch of the Mountain Club of South Africa. She invites you into the Mountain with her, to see 'the far' from a-near.. so as to share with you her love and passion for high Mountains and spectacular fynbos ... and mayhaps a little MCC...

DISA HUNT 31 January 2025

Table Mountain has errupted into a flower paradise in the area above Skeleton Gorge - disas, watsonias, agapanthus and thousands of other flowers in full bloom up there at the moment.

Join me this Friday on a Disa Hunt up there.

It is a strenuous 5-6 h early morning hike up Skeleton Gorge, through Backwater Ravine and down Nursery Ravine, but absolutely worth the effort! The cost is R850 per person and excludes entrance tickets to Kirstenbosch Gardens through which we enter.Group size will be limited to 8 persons.

This morning we kicked off the first hike in the ALIGN Guided Group Hike Series, a set of 12 beautiful, easy 3-4 h hikes, happening every 2nd Saturday on the mountains around Cape Town and the winelands.

ALIGN was designed to really give novices a safe and sustainable way to get started on the trails, connecting with nature in professionally guided group hike setting.

Well done to lovely Glenda, the first person to sign up for basically the full set of hikes, on grasping the opportunity with full hands! I'm really looking forward sharing this journey with you!

is my theme for 2025 and I shared this idea during yesterday's most special first ever AWAKEN - IGNITE - guided group day hike.

Yesterday's - OPPELSKOP VIEWS HIKE - is my favourite short cirquit, up to Oppelskop and around to the Saddle and back down, and wow, it did not disappoint!

As the photos show, it offers the best of everything... special fynbos ♡, truly magnificent views ♡, a mountain trail that challenges just enough, but rewards greatly. ♡♡♡

The AWAKEN Guided Group Hike Programme was designed to get you started on the trails, offering a safe, fun and sustainable way to also keep you going.

Comprising 4 series, the first, the AWAKEN - IGNITE - hike series takes place every 2nd Saturday, alternating between short 3-4 h hikes and medium 5-6 h hikes. IGNITE hikes are affordably priced so you can book one at a time and check things out before making any long-term investments into one of the other three series.

FLOURISH TOGETHER ♡♡♡

So my word for 2025 started out as , but soon enough life happened and I came to the realization that flourishing can only really happen when we strive for it . Everything is connected, and my flourishing needs and helps everything and everyone else around me to flourish too.

This morning Dixie and I did a quick scout up to Devil's Peak Saddle to check whether all is good for Saturday's launch of the new AWAKEN guided group hike programme. As always when one goes with an open heart, one's expectations are far exceeded. Our path is being safeguarded by friendly, competent people, lined with beautiful flowers and magnificent views. Now THAT is how I'd like to step into 2025, flourishing together.

IMMERSIVE TABLE MOUNTAIN hiking today with a beautiful couple all the way from ♡♡♡

Kasteelspoort trail is full of flowers, pink as well as peach coloured watsonia, and then there's the yellow daisies, purple pelargoniums, the fresh moist mountain air, the frogs clicking, vistas to the end of the earth, clouds wafting, orchids lining the footpath... just another day in Paradise :-)

We were fortunate to also meet some of the firefighters above Platteklip Gorge on their way home after a long night. We salute you!
