Makolekole

Makolekole Bringing clean, safe WATER FOR LIFE to the remote communities of Zambia's Luangwa Valley. Makolekole is the Nyanja word for carmine bea-eaters.

Christina (Gid) and Adrian Carr run Makolekole - a small borehole drilling company – bringing clean, safe water to the remote communities of the Luangwa Valley Zambia. In the remote villages of Zambia’s Luangwa Valley thousands of families still do not have access to safe, clean water. Women and children in rural villages often travel miles to find water in rivers or shallow wells. Collecting wate

r from rivers is potentially dangerous not only because the water is not clean but the risk of injury and death from crocodiles, elephants and other wild animals is very real; every year lives are lost. Luckily, the solution here in the Luangwa Valley is extremely simple – communal boreholes equipped with sturdy,’ low tech’ hand pumps. Our lightweight drilling rig is designed to access the most remote villages in the alluvial riverine areas which are hard to reach and for which conventional heavy rigs are unsuitable. These beautiful birds make deep holes in the sand of the river banks for their nests.

As October rushes by in a haze of heat - we reach the grand total of 300 boreholes since 2015 in the communities of the Luangwa Valley. That's around 60,000 people now with access to clean, safe water. Thank you to our wonderful, brilliant donors, to the fabulous MUSA (our US sister organisation) thank you to the communities who have been so co-operative and welcoming, to the headpersons who worked so hard on behalf of their villages to bring water. But most of all - THANK YOU to the best teams in the world - The Makolekole Drilling Team and the Kakoma Workshop team (mechanics, engineering, welding, logistics and back up)
Our aim is to reach 500 communities so we still have work to do!

At Tabe Village in Mnkhanya, residents were fetching water from an extremely poor source. Thanks to the wonderful Rudnitsky family from Las Vegas in the USA - Makolekole has been able to provide Tabe with a beautiful new borehole. THANK YOU to Abi, Ben and Jessica and thanks to Fidelis Skabala of Makolekole for the great photos. This is just one of more than 250 community boreholes Makolekole has drilled in the Luangwa Valley.

Young girls doing the washing up chores at a village we visited yesterday. Their water situation (a shallow lagoon shared with animals) is truly dire. I look forward to posting photos of their new borehole very soon. Permission was granted to show the photos.

It's rainy season, we can't drill in the rains and spend the time on maintenance of the rig, vehicles and kit. The drilling team has some well earned time off. During this down time we found out more about local football club - https://web.facebook.com/Valley-Queens-104189941520403 and have, in a small way, become a sponsor. Proud to support them. Great photos by Joseph Nkoma and Aaron Mwale.
