The mighty Zambezi river "river of life" is the 4th longest river in Africa and the longest east flowing river in Africa. The name Zambezi comes from the Tonga phrase "kasambabezi" meaning "only those who are familiar with the river can take a bath". By then the river was narrow and infested with crocodiles and hippopotamus, the locals knew the safe spots to take a bath and to fetch water.

The river originates from Mwinilunga district in north west Zambia and it flows through 6 countries Zambia, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is about 2700 km long and it's drainage basin covers 1,390,000 km². It holds 2 massive sources of hydro electric power, Kariba dam and Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique.

It is believed that BaTonga people were the first settlers along Zambezi valley. Before the construction of Kariba dam they used to cultivate crops through out the year along the river banks, this type of cultivation is commonly known as "inchelela" in Tonga.

This woman is holding a smoking pipe know as "Inchelwa/Ndombonda" in Tonga Language. It is a traditional way of smoking to***co used by elderly BaTonga woman in Binga. The word "Ndombonda/ indombonda" came from it's bubbling sound when the smoke is pulled through the water and into the mouth via the stem of the calabash.

It has a filtering system which reduces the strength of tobbaco and traps the impurities contained in to***co. That cup like holds embers of to***co and millet grains are added on top to add flavor.

Long back, after smoking they would drain the water from the calabash and use it as insects repellent.

Chizarira National Park " The Home Of Hidden Gorges", is the 4th largest national park covering 2000 km² located in Matabeleland North Province of Zimbabwe 🇿🇼. It is the most remote and least visited national park because of its isolated situation on the Zambezi Escarpment.

It has good wildlife populations and some majestic scenery. The name of the park comes from the BaTonga word "Chijalile", which translates into English as “great barrier”, referring to Zambezi Escarpment.
