Did you know that zebras are not only strikingly beautiful with their unique black-and-white stripes, but each pattern is as individual as a human fingerprint? These social animals live in herds, relying on each other for safety and companionship.

Their stripes serve multiple purposes: they help regulate body temperature, confuse predators, and even deter biting insects. Zebras communicate through various vocalisations and body language, showcasing their complex social structures.

Typically, zebras breed once a year, with females giving birth to a single foal after a gestation period of about 11 to 13 months. The foals can stand and walk shortly after birth, allowing them to quickly join the herd for protection.

An incredible migration, the largest migration in Southern Africa, happens in Botswana twice each year. This is a migration of Zebras from the north of the country to the south and then back up again. This natural phenomenon sees 30,000 animals moving in search of plentiful water and grazing space. Our protected areas within Botswana are in the deep south of the country and we sometimes see the effects of this migration towards the end of the rainy season (November to March) right before the animals start their long journey north again to be by the Chobe River and the Okavango Delta.
