Dear Marineland Boatowners and Customers,
The local rain season is long over, the lake levels keep rising although now much slower. This is very important for Lake Kariba. You may get the latest statistics on Lake Kariba Weekly Levels in Meters | Zambezi River Authority (zambezira.org)
The lake Kariba level of 28 June 2020 was at 481.27m whilst on 28 June 2021 the level was at 482.73m. This represents 52.58 % of full capacity. The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m (with 0.70m freeboard) for hydropower generation.
As the lake levels continue to increase, Marineland the deepest harbour in Kariba gets more mooring space available now and in the foreseeable future. In the recent past, it appears, the turbine discharge to have reduced too, meaning we have high water levels for a long time. Invite a friend to moor with us, the more the merrier!
This year 2021 we started using our concrete slipway much earlier, for easier launching of tender boats, and this is a pay off with the increased lake levels we now enjoy. Launching from this slipway has become a song. Repairs and maintenance on our gravel slipway at the western side of the harbour has since been done for use when the need arises and especially for particular specialised vessels like yachts that take long to launch.
At Marineland, our understanding regarding the current Covid19 Restriction is that,
1. There are no changes to International Air travel except that Passengers from countries with Delta and Alpha variants (India & The UK) will have to be quarantined on arrival for 10 days at own cost.
2. There are no changes to local holiday travel – This is most welcome!
3. No changes in regards to the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF)
4. Operating business hours are now 0800hrs to 1530hrs
Our current operating hours are from 0800hrs to 1530hrs, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with limited staff to decongest as per requirements at law. We are however available 24 hours a day if an essential need arises outside those operating hours. However, we encourage you to request from us travel documentation to prove to the authorities that yours is a genuine holiday travel. This will assist you to travel flawlessly. We encourage you to be patient with Authorities manning roadblocks, they do need our patience during these very difficult times. It would also appear that driving in Zimbabwe is flawless if you have the right paperwork justifying how essential your travel is and that your travel is purely for local holidaying from the reports I am getting from other customers. This is the time to bond with family, other than home, the next best place will be a houseboat. Guess what, Marineland is happy to receive you to achieve this. Again, most of the lake area is covered by almost all telephone networks so, virtual meetings, online lessons etc can still be achieved whilst on Lake Kariba! Please forgive us if we appear to be slow whilst trying to achieve all very important Covid19 Protocols.
During this rather quiet period, we have also taken time to give the whole property some TLC. Buildings are being repaired, Boatsheds are being repaired and cleaned more often, Carpark being repaired, tarmac being repaired, and the greenery very much improved in and around the property. All the above is being done for your comfort when you visit us and we will continue to prepare for your arrival soonest.

In these quite times it is always necessary to beef up our security both day and night. This does not come cheap and we are left with not much choice, but it does bring us all some peace of mind. With the increase in the daily water levels, please assist by continually reminding crew to check and tighten their moorings preferably on a daily basis, preferably, one crew member per boat per day to achieve decongestion.
With less movement in the harbour, this has seen a lot of houseboats plugging into shore power. We again request that you remind crew to utilise this expensive resource sparingly – as they would at their own homes. Coupled with this, it is common knowledge that the electricity tariffs have been increased in the recent past, and with the quantity and nature of our consumption, this will unnecessarily throw us into the Maximum Demand Customer category, which is not cheap at all!
One of our resources we need to critically manage is the amounts owing from boat owners. We need them NOW more than ever and we have ample time at our hands to put in our all to recover these outstanding amounts. We try by all means to avoid litigation and shall be leaving no stone unturned to ensure these amounts are paid up and Marineland is kept on track. We will go for litigation where necessary, we do have the time now. Please pay up all amounts outstanding if any, we need these funds to run and maintain the Harbour you so deserve. It is important that we mention here that we are most grateful to the +90% of our customers who are always up to date. Thank you!
We still have customers with a tendency of waiting up until month end or so to pay their fees, possibly waiting for the rate to deteriorate. Our obligations are at the beginning and during the month and they are revalued if we do not pay in time. Your payments in time will go a long way in dealing with this problem. Our fees are due and payable before or on the 1st of the calendar month, but we have been flexible to accommodate our customers to settle by the 7th of each month and if not settled by the 7th, we will be left with no choice but to reinvoice you when you are ready to pay, at the Marineland rate of the day. For those with available free funds, we encourage you to pay in USD wherever possible into our FCA Nostro. This would go a long way in reducing our cost structure if we are able to import and directly pay for some of our expenses in forex, please let us know if you wish to be invoiced in USD.
Our essential service departments are but not limited to Gas sales, Fuel sales, Shop, Boat Repairs and Maintenance (Struik Marine Services). Houseboat Bookings, Accounts, Harbour Office, Laundry & reception. These are operational but with very limited staff. We apologise in advance if we may appear not to be as efficient as usual whilst we uphold the Covid 19 protocols. You will assist a lot by easily following them without our request or calling in advance – All numbers below are on WhatsApp.
Our WhatsApp group for all our customers who are interested to discuss any issues of importance pertaining to Marineland is in place. This is your harbour, any ideas, inputs are most welcome. Please send me a message if you wish to be included in this group. We hope it should improve communication with our Boatowners and Customers.
Please observe Covid19 Protocols, stay safe, and keep well – we are here if you need a houseboat away from home!

Dear Valued Trade Partner,

We are very pleased with the decision by the Zimbabwean Government to allow domestic and international flights to resume, with the proviso passengers are tested for Covid-19 within 48 hours before they travel.

Domestic flights have been given the green light to resume from today, 10 September, while international flights are set to resume on 1 October.

All travellers will be required to have a PCR Covid-19 clearance certificate issued by a recognised facility within 48 hours from the date of departure, in line with WHO guidelines.

This means domestic air services on commercial and charter aircraft will soon be active in our skies once more.

Whilst there are some operational protocols to introduce and all necessary Statutory Instrument regulations to be published, it is a welcome and very positive decision by Cabinet and Ministry.

We are collaborating with our air partners in Zimbabwe to get passengers into the skies and enjoying the wonderful and diverse destinations and experiences as soon as possible.

We’ve created fly-in packages for our Victoria Falls properties and are looking forward to welcoming guests stepping onto the tarmac at Victoria Falls airport very soon.

Victoria Falls airport is ready to operate effective today, and hopefully the first flights will land in the coming days or week.

Talks are ongoing about regional airlines access to Victoria Falls, Livingstone and Kasane airports from South Africa and our regional neighbours.

We are hopeful that borders will open soon to also allow self-drive traffic, with Victoria Falls and Livingstone being an obvious travel bubble over the Victoria Falls Bridge.

The Victoria Falls Regional Tourism Association is engaged with fellow stakeholders in this ongoing initiative to "get tourism going" again.

It is also very good news to see Emirates announce that effective 1 October they will fly into Harare twice per week on their initial schedule.

Getting other loyal and supportive African carriers such as Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways to return to Victoria Falls airport will also be a huge boost for tourism in the region.

We look forward to welcoming you and your clients soon!

Warm Regards,

Ross Kennedy

Good morning Members A word of warning if you are driving up to Kariba From the 40 km peg to Magunji past the Bad Accident corner there are some serious pot holes. From 15 km to Makuti the road is badly pot holed and closer to Makuti the road has collapsed completely so with all the heavy traffic you need to be very cautious. There are a few pot holes on the Kariba road just be aware and careful As the houseboats are starting up now please pass this onto your friends Looking forward to seeing you all in Kariba soon.

Dear Marineland Boatowners and Customers, The local rain season is long over, but the lake levels keep rising, currently averaging some 50mm a day! We needed it this much and all my estimates of how much the lake will rise this season have been surpassed by far. However, the increase in lake level has slowed down albeit the falls still pumping in a lot. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, not much reasonable statistics is available as it appears the lockdown has kept the authorities from updating us.

The lake Kariba level of 25 May 2020 was at 480.66m whilst on 25 May 2019 the level was at 479.95m. This represents 36.76% of full capacity. The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m (with 0.70m freeboard) for hydropower generation.

As the lake levels continue to increase, and, being the deepest harbour in Kariba, more mooring space becomes available at Marineland now and in the foreseeable future. We also hope for the turbine discharge to be reduced too. Invite a friend to moor with us, the more the merrier!

We extended our concrete slipway during the dry season, for easier launching of tender boats, and this is paying off with the increased lake levels we now enjoy. Launching from this slipway has become a song. To this end, during the first week of June 2020, we will start repairs and maintenance on our gravel slipway at the western side of the harbour for use when the need arises especially for particular specialised vessels like yachts that take long to launch.

As we didn’t expect the current levels, maintenance of the inner western bay had been planned for some time later this year. We have had to embark on this during this quiet period. Work is ongoing, with the rubble from there being used to top up our inner harbour walls. We are actually racing against the increasing water levels but do believe we are ahead. This will yield more mooring space. Again, tell a friend!

During this quiet period, we have also taken time to give the whole property some TLC. Buildings are being repaired and painted, Boatsheds are being repaired and cleaned more often, Carpark being repaired, tarmac being repaired and intended new markings thereon, and the greenery very much improved in and around the property.

All the above is being done for you our customer, in full knowledge that the corona virus has denied us to be together for Easter Holidays, School Holidays, Workers Holiday and as we write to you this Africa Day Holiday! We continue to prepare for your visiting and hopefully soon.

With the increased poverty levels, the recent release of convicts, nationwide, low to nil activity in the harbour, it became necessary to beef up our security both day and night. This does not come cheap but does bring us all some peace of mind. With the increase in the daily water levels, about 50mm per day, please assist by continually reminding crew to check and tighten their moorings preferably on a daily basis. Last week, we had an occasion where our loss control officers had to secure two pontoon tenders that were floating away.

With nil movement out of harbour, this has seen a lot of houseboats plugging into shore power. This has spiked our electricity bill in the last two months. A report has been received by us of a certain crew member who prefers to stock up his frozen foods in the houseboat refrigerator, only withdrawing what he requires at home daily, in order to reduce his electricity bill at home, and unknowingly increasing the one at Marineland, that in turn would be passed on to the customers. Imagine our electricity bill if each houseboat is being plugged in this way and for such reasons. We again request that you communicate to crew to utilise this expensive resource sparingly – as they would at their own homes. Coupled with this, it is common knowledge that the electricity tariffs have been increased in the recent past, and with the quantity and nature of our consumption, this throws us in the Maximum Demand Customer category, that is not cheap at all.

Stand 688, Kariba is a property owned by Dawn Properties Ltd, leased and operated by Kingdom Calls (Pvt) Ltd t/a Marineland Harbour whose shareholding is in my name. Some individual(s) approached Dawn properties in an attempt to secure the very same lease. This did not materialise as Dawn Properties and Kingdom Calls have always enjoyed a mutual relationship that each party takes responsibility in nurturing. It is unfortunate that, for some reason, these individuals had gone all the way to town masquerading as the property owners and we understand in some instances offering contracts. This was frivolous and vexatious as one of them is actually our customer, elderly and that we used to hold in high regard. We are too blessed to name and shame him, but hopefully a lesson has been learnt by him and partner(s). I would like to correct this misleading rumour and reconfirm that Marineland ownership is as mentioned above and management has not changed. We wish for all of our customers to be free with us and communicate directly with us regarding any issues that pertain to our running the Harbour.

The business model for Marineland requires that we have full mooring occupancy at very low mooring rates. This in turn should increase the traffic through Marineland, hoping the same produces similar increased cashflows through other ancillary departments like, the shop, fuel, gas sales laundry, etc. The new lease fees will need us to fetch more from the boatowners if the other departments are not performing well. It is important that boatowners do support these other departments to ensure sustainability whilst on our part we are re-visiting every other cost centre to ensure that boat owners do receive affordable value for money service all round. Our business is seasonal with the peaks being experienced on Easter Holiday (March – April), Heroes Holiday (August), then Festive Season (December). The first peak season has been hit by Corona virus already making us very weak, whilst it would appear the same for the August Heroes Holiday this would cripple us if not well managed. We know even if the economy was to be fully open tomorrow, it would take some time for our customers to financially recover and do some holidaying, thus it is critical that all resources are well managed during this period.

One of the resources we need to critically manage is the amounts owing from boat owners. We need them NOW more than ever and we have ample time at our hands to put in our all to recover these outstanding amounts. We try by all means to avoid litigation and shall be leaving no stone unturned to ensure these amounts are paid up and Marineland is kept on track. Please pay up all amounts outstanding if any, we need these funds. It is important that we mention here that we are most grateful to the +90% of our customers who are always up to date. Thank you!

Last year, we gave you an indicative schedule with reduced USD values for your budgeting purposes although we did invoice you in ZWL bond. The ZWL bond values were in line with the RBZ Official exchange rate to the USD. For some time, the official RBZ rate was not so far apart with the unofficial market rate. The official rate was frozen at 25 whilst the unofficial rate is now recorded as high as over 80! Suppliers of services are importing most inputs and sourcing most of their forex on the black market, pushing these costs to us the end users. Official wages are now a joke and we have to implement Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) as frequent as we can. Agreed, some costs like council fees have not changed, but this is the reason councils can no longer afford to say collect refuse anymore or as frequently thereby passing on the very same costs back to us!

All the above issues has left us with no choice but to invoice at a higher rate from April. Unfortunately, this may not have been well communicated and timeously as it coincided with the initial lockdown at the end of March. Please accept my apologies. An average rate of the official and unofficial rate was used (RBZ @25 and Unofficial @ 45, at the time). This is not sustainable as a nation!
The same formula will be used for June invoices and in the foreseeable future. I do suspect the rate to be used for invoicing will average at around 50. I will not be able to tell the exact charges now as we all know a lot can happen to these exchange rates in the next 6 days. We have an increasing tendency of customers waiting up until month end to pay their fees, possibly waiting for the rate to deteriorate. Our obligations are at the beginning and during the month and they are revalued if we do not pay in time. Your payments in time will go a long way in dealing with this problem. Our invoices shall be valid up until the 7th of each month and if not settled by the 7th, we will be left with no choice but to reinvoice you when you are ready to pay. Our fees are due and payable on or before the 1st day of each month in advance. For those with available free funds, we encourage you to pay in USD wherever possible into our FCA Nostro and enjoy a discount of 5%. This would go a long way in reducing our cost structure if we are able to import and directly pay for some of our expenses in forex. Our USD values are attached hereto, please let us know if you wish to be invoiced in USD.

Kapenta fishing has been allowed. Karibeans have been fishing from the shores, albeit this being a grey area. I am not sure if this is officially allowed or not. Boating is sadly still closed and there has been no indication on when this might be possible. I would have imagined a houseboat to be the best place to quarantine or isolate with your family but it appears the authorities do not see it that way. Whatever theories behind Covid19, I believe and hope this is one way of nature healing itself. Just before lockdown, fish catches had gone very low (Quality and Quantity) but the Kapenta catches that I witnessed especially in the first week the Kapenta fishing ban was lifted, were very encouraging. I bet when the lake is opened, again, 2kg bream catches will be a normal catch and it won’t be surprising to catch a 15kg tiger. I hope for this soon!

Our essential service departments are operational from 0800hrs to 1630hrs. These are but not limited to Gas sales, Fuel sales, Shop, Repairs and Maintenance (Struik Marine Services). Houseboat Bookings, Accounts, Harbour Office, Laundry, reception are operational but with very limited staff. For essential travel across the lake, please seek authority from the Lake Captain. It would also appear that driving between Harare and Kariba is flawless if you have the right paperwork justifying how essential your travel is.

My apologies for a rather long newsletter but I felt it was important after some long period of quietness from my end. We shall be opening a WhatsApp group for all our customers who are interested to discuss any issues of importance pertaining to Marineland. This is your harbour, any ideas, inputs are most welcome. Please send a message so you may be included in this group if you wish. We hope it should improve communication with you our beloved Boatowners and customers.

Stay safe and keep well

ZEBRA WITH A LUMP ON HIS FACE – UPDATE 8/5/20

This week, we received several reports of a male zebra with a big lump on the side of his face/jaw.

He was seen at the Swift/Unifreight yard on Tuesday morning, along with his lady friends.

Permission was granted to dart him by ZimParks and we all met at the Swift yard mid-afternoon.

Carl darted the swollen faced boy and Wildlife Vet Margie inserted a needle into the lump to see what was going on.

It turned out to be a big lump filled with saliva! Probably from a kick or bump to the face.

After draining as much saliva as we could, he was given the reversal drug and was up and calling out to his lady friends not long after.

The saliva glad is probably damaged and the lump will fill again with saliva but once healed, he should make a full recovery.

Back with his lady friends after a quick “nap”

THANK YOU TO:

All the concerned residents who called in to notify us.

Swift Manager David, for keeping an eye on the herd until we arrived to treat him.

We encourage all to make sure we are aware of the latest information on COVID-19, use good judgment and follow WHO and public health advice on how best to protect ourselves.

Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this pandemic and we wish them a speedy recovery.

We declare Marineland a no human contact facility until further notice. Sanitisers have been put in all strategic positions and also available on request if you cannot locate them.

Let us all WASH and put our hands together to fight this pandemic.

Best Regards,

Obert Mapara & Marineland Team
