It was only in November 1855 that he set off down the Zambezi River to find for himself 'The Smoke That Thunders' – Mosi oa Tunya 💦 He travelled down the Zambezi River on foot and spent the night on Kalai Island a few kilometres upstream of the Falls. The next morning he set off in a dug out canoe guided by the locals who knew the river well. As they approached the falls they could see the columns of spray appearing in the sky and could hear the roar of the waterfall. Here, the calving season commences as the next generation of the migration is birthed, with a mass of predators trailing in their wake. 📍Where to stay: Nyasi Migrational Camp (southern location) or Mwiba Lodge 🗓️ APRIL TO JUNE As the good grazing on the southern grounds depletes and the calves are strong enough to cover long distances, the Migration weaves up through the central Serengeti to reach the western region. Along this journey, the males declare temporary territories and fight for the right to as many females as they can — we call this the rutting season. 📍Where to stay: Mila Tented Camp 🗓️ JULY TO NOVEMBER The northern reaches of the Serengeti begins to fill with innumerable herds in anticipation for the dramatic crossing season.
