“Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise, a hunter’s Valhalla, an escapist’s Utopia. It is what you will, and it withstands all interpretations. It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one. To a lot of people, as to myself, it is just home.”
● Beryl Markham

In the second half of the 15th century Great Zimbabwe came to an abrupt end and its successor, the Khami, developed both the stone building techniques and the pottery styles found at Great Zimbabwe and seeded a number of smaller sites over a wide region of the southern and western plateau. The Khami Ruins rarely pop up in people’s mind when they are on holiday in Zimbabwe and many tour guides even leave it out of their itinerary but that does not diminish its status as a World Heritage Site that is worth a visit as it is a remarkably interesting place. Spend a few hours in Khami Ruins, comprising of a hill complex, Portuguese Cross, Dam Wall, the gong and a site museum. Apart from these, the entire area reflects the aura of the bygone era.

"Neither in the volume of water, in the mountains billows thrown up by the rapids, nor in the breadth and tumult of the current can the Zambezi below the cataract be compared with Niagara."

With a fall of 108m, the Rainbow Falls are the highest section of the Falls. When at maximum flow it is a roaring torrent, at other times it consists of numerous cascading rivulets and the fine spray results in a near permanent double rainbow. Given this marked variation, the local Toka-Leya refer to this section as Nsyungu Mufu(mist of the dead), associating it with the very cycle of life and death and the role of the ancestral spirits who they believe mediate with the abstract deity, Leza, which lives in the chasm below.

To understand the formation of the Falls, one has to look at the underlying geology and the ancient tectonic processes that shaped ancestral Africa. The main bedrock in the Victoria Falls area is basalt, a dark volcanic rock formed around 180 million years ago.
The basalt stretches some 200km from Kazangulu on the Botswana border to the Matetsi River confluence in the Batoka Gorge.
