Graeme grew up in Kariba, spending his school holidays exploring the Ume River, Mana Pools and the Charara safari area, some of Zimbabwe’s wildest and most beautiful locations...
Every night under the stars in the bush is special, but I think the start of the rains has to be one of my favourite experiences - the energy and dynamic nature of the looming rains beneath thundering storm clouds... just adds another dimension.
On top of that, we usually see the park wind down as the season comes to an end - allowing the adventurous guest a uniquely private safari experience.

During this magical time, when the last tourists bid farewell and camps take a rest, Mana Pools reveals its most scenic vistas and cherished secrets to only a select few intrepid adventurers. It's a world of its own, with lush greenery and the symphony of summer migrants, including the woodland kingfisher, African emerald cuckoos, carmine bee-eaters, and majestic eagles.
But the real treasures of the green season hide in the riparian thickets and woodlands along the Zambezi. Here, we embark on a quest to spot the elusive African Pitta, Pels Fishing Owl, Narina Trogon, and the Green Malkoa - some of Southern Africa's most sought-after sightings.
Our expedition adapts to the summer conditions, offering waterproof tents, gumboots, raincoats, and specially equipped 4x4 vehicles with winches and off-road tires. An expedition to the rugged, remote expanse of Chizarira National Park is for the wilderness purist looking for something different and exclusive – stunning vistas, deep ravines and gorges, crystal clear springs and a returning wildlife presence after decades of poaching and exploitation add to the rich birdlife that flourishes in the diverse terrain.
Often overlooked, and for a fair reason – this is a destination returning to its former glory, ready to share its many secrets and treasures once again. It’s here where one can sit perched high on a clifftop, hot coffee in hand, peering through a spotting scope at Peregrine, Lanner or Taita Falcon nests on the cliff faces below. African Pitta, Narina Trogon, African Broadbill, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Pels Fishing Owl, Dickenson’s Kestrel and many other uncommon and rare species call this mountain wilderness home.

One of the most memorable sights in Mana Pools are the elephants as they wander through the magical Acacia Albida forests along the floodplain.
The golden light of the early season filters through the tree canopy creating a mystical and otherworldly ambience...by late August and September a magical blue hue tints the floodplain - creating the unique Mana Pools light...
Some of the elephants in this area are famed for their unique feeding habits... rising up on their hind legs to reach the low hanging branches of the Apple Ring Acacia (Faidherbia albida).

Graeme grew up in the Zambezi Valley and loves sharing his passion for Africa and her wild spaces with his guests. He loves a campfire, and has a knack of telling a good story with some great sound effects.
MILO - the affable safari host, fireside companion and conversation extraordinaire. Milo managed John’s Camp in Mana Pools for 15 years and has hosted numerous mobile safaris across Southern Africa making him the perfect expedition host. These two both began their ‘safari careers’ in 2009 in Mana Pools.
