The rainy season in western Zimbabwe typically runs from October to March and it is completely dry the rest of the year. With very little to no natural surface water, Hwange National Park and its surrounding wildlife areas, as well as the communities in the region, depend heavily on these rains for drinking, sanitation and food. A plentiful rainy season alleviates tensions during the dry season...a poor rainy season means insufficient water to last into the dry months and low nutrition.

A normal rainy season sees about 550mm of water benefit the area. This year, total rainfall has not surpassed 175mm, and temperatures have been incredibly high.

People and animals are already feeling the stress of the looming drought, a phenomenon likely to affect so many worldwide. Swipe to see what have achieved in the last year, and continue to do so annually.

This year’s drought is of course a concern to not only all of us, but also to our incredible wildlife across Zimbabwe & the region. In Hwange NP for instance where its naturally arid conditions mean a normal rainy season sees only about 550mm per annum, total rainfall this year has not surpassed 175mm in some areas. The silver lining is that drought means excellent wildlife sightings. The best way we can support our parks is with our patronage to the lodges there, and/or our donations.
