We posted this photo a while ago and realised it caused some confusion, mainly due to a word in the description, as we used the word 'inside'; while it should actually read 'over'.

This is a species of wild fig, called a strangler fig. However, the word 'strangler' actually describes a few, similar behavioral plant species found in tropical and subtropical environments.

How this plant works is rather interesting...
These plants are 'hemiepiphytes', spending the first part of their life without rooting into the ground. And how that happens is proof of certain animals, like monkeys, bats or some species of bird that effectively disperse seed through their faeces.

Let's, hypothetically 'speaking', assume a bird flew over the abandoned chimney and 'p**ped' (for lack of a better word). In there p**p was an undigested seed/s (most seeds have a really tough outer shell preventing digestion acids destroying them so that this can occur), and 'Wa-la!'. A tree was born that, in this case, gives and gives feeding many animals with their fruit!

Stranglers often grow downwards from the top, over structures or most times over trees. Their roots travel down towards the ground and take root in the earth, usually by then they have strangled the other tree to death. So, this is mostly a parasitic plant, but it is also believed it loans their host tree additional support during storms [whilst still alive].
