Hello, I hope you all had a great weekend, I have just returned from a 3 night safari Rhino Safari Camp in Matusadona national Park in lake Kariba. Yes i know i did a post on Kariba last week saying how great it is and that the sunsets are incredible and all that, well ..... it is all that and more. The green season is an incredible time to be in the bush, we saw some good animals, lots and lots of beautiful birds, we experienced a proper African storm and just when we though it could not get any better we had the most amazing sunset cruise.

Here are some pictures from a 3 night safari in Matusadona National Park

Enjoy

So here is a 8 day safari that covers 2 of Zimbabwe's most well known national parks. The price does not include any transfers between the camps and lodges. You will have to charter a flight between Mana Pools and Hwange National Park. As I say this is just a guide line so if you want more information on a safari in Zimbabwe do get in touch.

So this weeks bird is very cool as it was a first for me to see it in our garden. I have seen it in many of the national parks around Zimbabwe but never in our garden in Harare. The bird I am talking about is the Broad-billed Roller

The Broad-billed Roller is the smallest of the 5 rollers that we get in Zimbabwe and the only one to have a yellow bill, so fairly easy to identify

They are an inter-African breeding migrant and so we can see them in Zimbabwe from October through to April. I did wonder if this particular bird was already thinking about moving north as our rains have been terrible.

Happy Birding

So from my posts of Highlights in Zimbabwe I have had a few questions about costs of Safaris. I have put together a short safari itinerary that includes Zimbabwe's biggest national park and the magnificent Victoria Falls. The price is just a guide line as price will depend on what time of the year you travel and whether you fly between camps or do road transfers.

I will work on other Itineraries which will include safaris in Kenya and Zambia as well.

If you would like more information on costs and activities please get in touch.

Cheers for now

So this weeks Zimbabwe Highlight is.... Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park

Now this is a place that I am very fond of and I am always excited when going to Kariba. I spent my early years as a kid camping in Tashinga(Matusadona's HQ), then a lot of my holidays as a teenager was spent on a house boat cruising around the bays of lake Kariba and then I spent about 8 years guiding in and around the park so i could go on for ages about this beautiful park.

For me what I really love about guiding guests in this park is the fact that you can spend the morning on the ground Tracking lions or Elephant on an early morning walk and then you can spend the afternoon cruising around on boat viewing animals on land as well as getting closer to Hippo and crocodiles and some incredible birds.

Matusadona has had some tough times but in 2019 African Parks (a non-profit conservation organisation) signed a 20 year agreement with Zim Parks to help revitalise this amazing park.

I do personal think it is worth a visit and I think this park is only going to get better.

Highlights of this park are

Incredible scenery and sunsets
Bush walks - Tracking Lion and buffalo
The Sanyati Gorge
Catching a Tiger Fish
Relaxing boat cruisers on the Lake.
Birding
A photographers Paridise

There are a variety of Lodges and camps that you can stay at
Rhino Safari Camp
Changa Safari Camp
Musango Island Safari Camp
African Bush Camps - Bumi Hills
Fothergill Island
Spurwing Island
and of course camping at Tashinga

I do hope you get to experience this incredible wilderness. If you are interested and not sure where to start I will be very happy to assist.

Happy Friday everyone

Hi all, I hope you have all had a good start to the week. So this weeks bird is the magnificent Verreaux's Eagle which some of you might know as the African Black Eagle. This eagle gets its name from a French naturalist whos name was ..... Jules Verreaux he did also have a brother called Edouard and they worked in the Cape

The Verreaux's Eagle , likes to hang out in mountainous and Rocky areas with big cliffs and normally lots of rock Hyrax, as this is they main food. They will also hunt monkeys ,squirrels and other small mammals. In Zimbabwe I have seen them in Victoria Falls, the Sanyati Gorge, Lake Kariba, the northern part of Hwange and Chizarira which is where these pictures were taken. The Matopo Hills is another great spot for them in Zimbabwe.

Happy Birding 🦅

So the last 2 weeks I have spoken of Zimbabwe highlights, today I am going to talk about a hidden Gem,

CHIZARIRA NATIONAL PARK - "The Hidden Gorges"

Chizarira is Zimbabwes 3rd largest national park and properly one of the lest visited parks in the country. It is a park of magnificent gorges, numerous natural springs and incredible scenic landscapes.

It is not a place to see wildlife in huge numbers it is more about a true wilderness experience, getting off the beaten track, disconnecting in order to connect with nature. The park does have lion, buffalo, leopard and elephant as well as many antelope. Chizarira is a bird watchers paradise without a doubt, there are not many places where you can watch Verreaux's eagles flying by at eye level. 360 plus bird species have been recorded in the Chizarira national park.

There are a few operators in the park now and the airstrip is operational so it is becoming slightly easier to access. If you want to explore a true wilderness area and camping is your thing, then this is the place for you.

The joys of mana Pools , being able to few animals on walking safaris and then finishing off with a sundowner on the banks of the Zambezi..

Meet Boswell - one of the biggest and cleverest Bull Elephants in Mana Pools!

Last year, I had the privilege of spending a few days walking with this magnificent animal! Watch the video at the link below…

Helloooo.... I hope you have all had a great weekend.
So here is this weeks bird...... Its the White-fronted Bee-eater, if you have spent any time on the Zambezi river or dry river beds in some of the parks, then you have most likely seen this beautiful bird. White front is referring to the white on the forehead.

This picture was taken in the Gonarezhou National park close to the Runde River. It had just feed on a butterfly. So although the name says Bee-eater it actually feeds on a variety of insects.

Zimbabawe Highlights Number 2

Last week I did a post on Great Zimbabawe Ruins, this weeks Highlight is the amazing Hwange National Park.

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest National park, it is over 14500 square Kilometers. I would say it is Zimbabawes most popular national park. It is a big 5 park and has one of the highest concentrations of elephant in Africa. It has over 100 species of mammals and well over 400 species of birds. Hwange national park is open all year round and for me it is a park worth visiting in the green season. The dry season is when most people visit Hwange as that is when all the animals are focused around the pumped water holes. Hwange is nice and close to Victoria Falls and so it is easy to combine a safari with a visit to the Victoria Falls. There are many diffirent types of safari lodges and camps as well as mobile camps that can be booked for an incredible experience.

Hwange was declared a game reserve in 1928
It is named after a local Nhanzwa chief, Chief Whanga.
It was the royal hunting grounds for the Ndebele King Mzilikazi in the early 19th century

Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a good weekend, some of you are still probably enjoying the half term. Right Craig Bradnick you called me out on a facebook post not so long ago about bird posts. For those that don 't know what I am talking about, during that terrible time of covid and lockdown, I would go out into the garden and take a picture of a garden bird and post it on facebook. Craig you are not the only one to mention to me to start this up again. I want to say thank you for this, I will get my arse into gear and do a bird post at the begining of every week when I can.

Zimbabwe has over 650 bird species so it is an incredible country for birding. I will post bird pictures from all over the country but today I will start with Harare. Harare has some very special birds found in some lovely areas.

Todays bird is a YELLOW - THROATED LONGCLAW this bright yellow bird likes grassy areas so, in Harare you can find it in Haka park or Komani, this particular picture was taken in Haka Park They mainly feed on insects. We get 3 species of longclaw in Zimbabwe, The Yellow-throated, Rosy-throated and cape longclaw.

T.G.I.F ...Running into the half term weekend like a hippo.... Yesterday was World Hippo Day. For me one of the best places to view Hippos is Lake Kariba, Matusadona National Park you can often see them sunbathing on the shoreline as well as in the water. Sunset cruises on Lake kariba are the best activities for this.

So last week I said I would start doing some posts of highlights of places to see in Zimbabwe.
Today I will post some pictures of a place that dates back to between the 11th and 15th centuries. It has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Some of you have probably already guessed it, I am talking about The Great Zimbabwe Ruins Zimbabwe basically meaning House Of Stone.

It is an incedible site to see, some of the walls are 6 metres wide in places and stand 11 metres high, all made from granite. It was believed that at one point there was up to 20000 peoploe living there.

If you do have the time it is worth a visit, it can be tied in with visiting Kyle national park as well as Gonarezhou.

My next post will be on Zimbabwes largest national Park.

Zimbabwe.... is a country that has great national Parks, History and culture. We have one of the Seven wonders of the world, Victoria Falls, we have Hwange National Park which has one of the highest concentrations of African Elephant. Zimbabwe also has the mighty Zambezi river as well as magical mana Pools national park. These are just a few highlights that Zimbabwe has, I mean I have not even mentioned The Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Gonarezhou national Park, there is to much to mention in one post, next week I will post about some of these amazing Highlights in Zimbabwe with more detail.

For now here are some pictures taken from around the country. Let me know if you recognise any of the places.

For me one of the best parts of a safaris, is sitting around the camp fire with a drink in hand and just listening to the bush around you. Most tented camps like this one do not have a fence around them so the animals are free to roam through camp.

This picture was taken in Gonarezhou National Park
