When temperatures dip below 32 degrees pets are advised to stay indoors!

It's a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it's untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather.

Leaving pets in a car can be dangerous, even for a short period. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind if you must leave your pet in a vehicle:

1. Avoid Hot or Cold Weather
Never Leave Pets in a Hot Car: Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke or even death. In as little as 10 minutes, a car can become dangerously hot.
Be Cautious in Cold Weather: Cars can also become too cold in winter, which can be dangerous, especially for small or short-haired pets.

2. Park in the Shade
Find Shade: Always park in a shaded area to help keep the car cooler.
Use Sunshades: Use reflective sunshades on windows to block out some heat.

3. Provide Ventilation
Crack the Windows: Crack the windows slightly to allow fresh air to circulate, but remember this alone is not enough to keep the car cool on hot days.
Ventilation Fans: Portable battery-operated fans can help circulate air, but they are not a substitute for proper cooling.

4. Leave Water
Provide Water: Leave a bowl of water in the car, preferably one that won’t easily tip over. There are specialized water dispensers designed for travel that can be useful.

5. Monitor the Temperature
Temperature Alerts: Consider using a temperature monitor that alerts you if the car’s interior reaches a dangerous level.
Check Frequently: If you're running errands, check on your pet frequently to ensure they're safe.

6. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Watch for Symptoms: Signs of heatstroke in pets include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately.
