The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda was founded in 1985 and resides in the former St. John’s Courthouse, built in 1750 and believed to be the oldest building in town. The architect was Peter Harrison, well known for many fine buildings in the United States and the West Indies, from Mansion House in New York City to the Spanish Town Statehouse in Jamaica. The Court of Justice was held on the ground floor, with meeting rooms for the Legislative Council and Assembly upstairs.

VERE CORNWALL BIRD, THE FIRST prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, was born in St John’s in 1910. He became prime minister in 1981 and held that position until 1994. During that time, Bird took the twin-island nation from a British colony to an independent nation.

Bird is seen by many as the father of the nation, and homages to him can be found all over the island of Antigua (the international airport for example was renamed in his honor). However, none are as bright or have such a prominent placement as the VC Bird Monument.

Located at Fort James... There are 10 cannon on the ramparts of the fort, these fired a 24 lb ball with an 8 lb charge one and a half miles. Eleven men were needed to handle a gun, the gun itself weighs two and a half tons.

These cannon today help visitors to the fort get a feeling of the past and are thus a part of Antiguan History 🇦🇬

A 300-foot hike to the summit of Fort Barrington takes about 30 minutes, but provides an astounding view that is well worth the effort!

It is named after Admiral Barrington who, in 1779, strongly fortified the southern entrance to St. John’s Harbour.

The fort is a giant semi-circular gun emplacement dominating the approaches to St. John's Harbour.

The ruin is also worth a visit and of course, be sure to enjoy the magnificent views from this lookout which are breathtaking indeed.
