Ahoy, me hearties! Avast ye, thar she blows. 🐋

Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day from Tradition’s Old Salt, Buccaneer Grumpy Bum and his motley crew. Ahoy from the land of reefs from present and past hands, first mate Chummy Limp-a-lot, Old Mucker Long Beard, Ol’ McPirate, Mad Swashbuckler and Stinky Sea Snake. Use the chart and share your pirate name in the comments.

On a more serious note, it’s no longer the Golden age of piracy when pirate crews mostly volunteered and welcomed everyone into the brotherhood, made up of mostly men from all walks of life. According to Smithsonian Magazine, “On pirate decks, there was no social ranking. Everyone got to vote on decisions and take a fair cut of the spoils. Far from the Hollywood image of anarchy, pirate crews signed articles to strictly control life at sea. Edward Low, the meanest pirate of the golden age, banned drunkenness at times of attack. Welshman Bartholomew Roberts, who bucked the hard reputation of the scowling pirate by dressing in scarlet breeches and tucking a red feather in his hat; he also drank tea rather than rum and forbade the lighting of candles after 8 p.m.” And, “while violence was sometimes inevitable, pirates’ main goal was to persuade victims to give up their cargoes without a fight. Ultimately, piracy was not a way of life, but rather a brief act of defiance. Most sea dogs dreamed of one large prize and melting into polite society. Reality rarely worked out so well. Almost all pirates failed and went on to meet an unhappy end.”

There is still some piracy in the Caribbean today which is not glamorous, and fortunately it is not abundant. Today we get to live in a more relaxed era of sailing the Caribbean Sea and enjoy tales of the pirates of long ago as we glide through the same waters and use some of their same words that have lasted over the years and come alive in popular culture. 🏴‍☠️

After much better weather than the previous day Tradition passed St. Lucia and its Pitons, St. Vincent and its volcano. Then began their overnight sail through the Grenadines toward their final destination, the largest of the Grenadines, and Tradition’s home of Carriacou. 🇬🇩 And guess what…? They have arrived!(see our story)

After a night of motoring through rain, lightning and thunder... Another presentation from Mother Nature as the sun rose near the next brief stop. As Tradition does her southern journey each year for maintenance in Carriacou, there’s plenty of rewarding moments along the way. ❤️⛵️

Here are some scenes from Tradition’s southern journey to Carriacou this year...

🇩🇲 First is Dominica. Tradition stopped in Portsmouth in the northwest of the island for a quick break, a little sleep, and provisioning. Dominica is dripping with fruit and draped in rainbows. This breadfruit on the deck of Tradition will sail to the final destination of Carriacou and be shared and thoroughly enjoyed. The coconuts too. For those who are unfamiliar, breadfruit grows mostly in tropical areas and is high in carbohydrates, fiber, Vitamin C and potassium.

🇰🇳 The next picture is of St. Kitts, followed by a picture of the island of Nevis which is very close to St. Kitts, just across The Narrows, and together form the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, one nation. Tradition made a stop off of Pinneys Beach in Nevis, their first stop after leaving St. Martin. The Nevis Peak can be seen - it’s a “potentially active” stratovolcano and has not had any eruptions since written records came into existence.

🇦🇬 Last image is Redonda in the distance to the east, beyond Tradition’s port side or windward side. This side of Tradition has lashings of potable water canisters and coolers for food and drinks so it doesn’t move and gives weight to the “high side” of the boat. Redonda is an uninhabited island that is between Nevis and Montserrat but belongs to Antigua and Barbuda. It is the remains of a very old, extinct volcano. Long ago it was a hideout for pirates and in the 1800’s was mined for guano.

Happy September everyone! We will share more journey photos soon… In the meantime, see our previous posts or our website and take advantage of 20% off Tradition sails beginning in December ‘24 through the end of July ‘25. Book now and save. ❤️⛵️

Acknowledging World Photography Day! It’s an appropriate time to say thank you to everyone who’s shared their fantastic photos with us and express appreciation for the gift of photography. Capturing the great moments in life and the beauty around us is a wonderful way spark memories in the years to come.

👉 From worldphotographyday.com:
“World Photography Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography. Since the early 19th century, photography has become an ever-increasing medium of personal expression and appreciation for countless people around the world.

A photograph has the ability to capture a place; an experience; an idea; a moment in time. For this reason, it’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Photographs can convey a feeling faster than, and sometimes even more effectively than words can. A photograph can make the viewer see the world the way the photographer sees it.”

This photo is of our photographer friend Jean-François from St. Barth as he captures one of the many beautiful boats that participate in the annual West Indies Regatta. ❤️

Greetings from Sandy Ground! For our friends who are away and seeing radar in the tropics or warnings of Tropical Storm Ernesto being shared on social media, please don’t worry. The center of the system is passing over Guadeloupe, about 170 miles away. It’s a lovely breezy day in Anguilla with off and on rain - like we like but don’t often get. Our heavier rains may still be ahead but the wind is nice and cool and not even constant. Tradition is peacefully on her mooring and there are currently fishermen on the Sandy Ground jetty. ❤️

We’re missing our guests but took a day on Tradition to do a quick jump from Sandy Ground to Meads Bay for Anguilla’s August Thursday boat race before we depart for Carriacou. Combining slooplife and Anguilla boat racing is a rare pleasure. ❤️⛵️

The Champ of Champs boat race is Sunday… Any predictions on which Anguilla racing boat will win?

03/08/2024

Thank you for all of the physical donations over last month in Anguilla that have been brought to our friends at Roy's Bayside Grill, Anguilla, BWI. We’ll name today as the official cut-off day for dropping items at Roy’s and say thanks to them, to you who donated and to our team of volunteers helping with the effort. 💪

In case you didn’t know... Do you see where the red paint meets the blue paint on the bottom of Tradition? That’s her waterline and we need to keep the red paint at the surface of the sea when we set sail for Carriacou and therefore must be cognizant of weight and space as some heavier, larger needs will be purchased in St. Martin on our way down. We are very thankful to all of you for caring and for your generosity, time and effort. Anguilla cares and it’s heartwarming. 🇦🇮

While donation of items at Roy’s will end, what will continue is our fundraising for the island of Carriacou! The donation button will remain on Tradition’s website https://tradition-sailing.com and Deb and Laurie will continue to use that money to purchase from the list of most needed items and distribute until the island of Carriacou is in a better place of recovery. Please continue donate if possible and share story of Hurricane Beryl’s massive destruction on the island, and of the needs of the majority of the population because it makes a difference. Thank you! ❤️

It’s August 1... Tradition’s Anguilla charters are officially on a break until November. This is the part where we still work, as the work shifts to maintenance, but we miss the best part of what we do and that is sailing with our guests. Each year we meet great new people and look forward to sailing with repeat guests who’ve become friends - you make the hard work fun and fulfilling. Thank you! Thank you from this year’s team of Captain Laurie, Deb, Captain Thomas, and Bea (you don’t see her as often on the boat because she’s behind the scenes in Tradition’s kitchen). Thank you for choosing us, for spreading the word about your experiences and thank you always for the love and support. ❤️

What’s ahead? In August we’ll sail Tradition down to her birth island of Carriacou. If you’ve been following our social media, you know Carriacou got devastated by Hurricane Beryl in July and are in recovery mode from over 95% structure damage. Since everything has changed there, we’ll be playing a lot by ear once we get there. Tradition will carry relief items from Anguilla and St. Martin to Carriacou and after we’re there we’ll see what else we can do to help and begin Tradition’s maintenance. We will continue to raise funds to purchase items needed for the people of Carriacou. A donation button is on Tradition’s website and Deb can take them over the phone or via email (264-476-7245 or [email protected]) if you’d like to help. Thanks to all who’ve donated and continue to contribute to helping others in need as sadly at this time, it’s the good people of . 🇬🇩

Please check back in with us on social media for updates on our upcoming endeavors as well as highlights from our times sailing with you too. Thank you all! 🙌

Hi friends. The journalist/documentarian who was present for Hurricane Beryl in Carriacou has returned and shared a look at what's it's like on the ground there now and in Petite Martinque across the way. It's over 20 minutes long and includes promotion but covers local residents, boaters and ramifications of animals - if you don't make it through the entire video, have a look at it from 19:15 to see the spirit and mindset of what represents the majority of the people we know there.

They still need help and we are still collecting donations to take items they need to them directly. If you'd like to help, please donate via Tradition's website, https://tradition-sailing.com/ or reach out to Deb at 264-476-7245 or [email protected]. Thank you for staying with us through this and helping! ❤🇬🇩

26/07/2024

Today is an International day dedicated to conservation of mangrove ecosystems, backed by UNESCO. Anguilla has approx .5 miles of mangrove forest. The Little Harbour mangrove is quite beautiful and an important part of the island. Have you explored? Here’s a link for any folks who’d like to learn a little about mangrove ecosystems: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/mangrove-ecosystem-conservation

In the Lesser Antilles, mangroves stretch from Anguilla to Grenada, vary with their contents, but are vital to all. We’ll share our personal images before Hurricane Beryl of the unique area in Carriacou known as the Oyster Bed. It’s a mangrove area that’s also culturally significant. The last three shots are drone images are of boats there after the hurricane passed.

While the Carriacou Oyster Bed and Mangrove Reserve area is protected and restrictions exist for recreational/commercial fishing, entry into the oyster bed is allowed and boats tend to tie up or anchor there for protection especially during a storm. The passing of Hurricane Beryl had local fishing boats, resident sailors and many visiting boats hunkered down there that are now damaged or sunken. Since the island is so devastated, the boaters who are present are doing what they can since many others leave their boats and are not physically on the island. Hopefully soon organizations and those in a position to delicately help will be able to help restore Carriacou’s Oyster Bed and Mangrove Reserve. They are naturally resilient areas however, a massive clean-up would be helpful there now on this .

Our goal remains on fundraising for needed items for the people on the island of Carriacou who are now homeless and jobless. We will sail down and distribute more in August and report back. If you’d like to help us help them, please donate via https://tradition-sailing.com or contact Deb 264-476-7245 or [email protected].

Thanks once more for being with us as we focus on the needs of our friends in Carriacou. Please keep sharing and help if you can.

Happy World Mangrove Day!

Sharing some beauty from a recent sunset sail. Tradition is currently taking bookings and doing sails through the end of July, then we’ll take several month’s hiatus.

Now’s your chance for one last lobster roll or coveted devil egg, one last jump from Tradition’s gunwale, or one more memory made on deck as the sun sets over the sea… or hold your peace until November! ❤️⛵️ Call Deb or email to get in on these last opportunities in July, 264-476-7245 or [email protected].

As we look back, we’re grateful to everyone who sailed with us. We have the best guests. Thank you!

24/07/2024

UPDATE on our and your collective efforts to help with vital Hurricane Beryl relief supplies in Carriacou! Here are a few snaps of Cassiopeia II (thanks to Capt. Harold Neel) arriving and unloading on the main wharf in Carriacou. You would have last seen this schooner in our July 9 reel when she was loading supplies at the wharf in Anguilla. Cassiopeia is one of several boats that have left Anguilla or Sint Maarten with supplies donated or items purchased with money donated and delivered to Carriacou. Cassiopeia carried clothing, diapers, non-perishable foods, mosquito nets, etc. On top of the goods donated, Tradition so far has received about $75,000 EC or almost $28,000 US and purchased everything from generators, fuel/fuel cans, air mattresses, solar lights and saws... the list goes on and we are very appreciative for your help!

A forthcoming update will include a connection made between Secours Populaire Français (SPF) in Paris and their SPF coordinator in St. Martin, to send medical relief to the hospital matron in Carriacou. Every connection counts and is making a difference. Check back for more on that endeavor!

Even with the work and generosity of many, the needs of the people and community in Carriacou are still greater than can be imagined. We continue to ask for help in order to aid them directly. With your continued assistance, we will be pleased to report again, an even larger dollar amount sent their way as they begin to rebuild. Please continue to share the story of mass devastation on the island of Carriacou, the needs of the people, reach out to others who may be in a position to help monetarily or arrange for vital supplies to help them recover from over 95% homeless. Together we can help them begin to rebuild homes and businesses to regain a normal lifestyle, which was a beautiful one on their special island. Thank you again for your help and for your patience as we focus on the needs of others who are close to our hearts. ❤️🇬🇩

It’s a beautiful day for sailing! Looks like a gorgeous week ahead too. Tradition Sailing has one and a half more weeks of charters in Anguilla before we take our break and sail down to Carriacou to bring hurricane relief items and do maintenance. We hope to see you on deck before we go!

If there’s anything you can contribute to Carriacou, please do. Our website is handy for donating or to book your sail, https://tradition-sailing.com/, and you can always contact Deb directly at 264-476-7245 or [email protected].

We’ll share another update on our efforts for Carriacou soon. Wishing everyone a great week ahead! ❤️

20/07/2024

Tradition’s original launch anniversary today is a poignant one. With wood cut and shaped by hand and put together with heritage skills and care, by a father for his son, in the village of Windward on the island of Carriacou – his boat, Tradition, has successfully navigated the Caribbean Sea, skirted storms, carried cargo, and sailed souls for 46 years now.

Builder Urbin Robert’s work began long before the launch, using hand tools and working beachside in between rain showers and gathering materials, Tradition came together. She was painted red and launched in traditional style with many helping hands, keel on rollers, ropes and muscles abounding, string band playing, blessings and a fete spirit of working together on the accomplishment.

Urbin’s son Norman operated Tradition many years, sail trading the Caribbean. After her first change of hands she was brought ashore for work, relaunched in 2008 (pictured), and utilized briefly until Laurie bought her and cleaned her up for charters in Anguilla. Norman still helps along with many other remarkably skilled men from Windward, to keep Tradition in the best shape.

Today Windward sits in ruin. Most of the homes and livelihoods are destroyed after being ravaged with a direct hit from Hurricane Beryl on July 1. We at Tradition Sailing along with volunteers have been working to raise funds and obtain donations to help the people of Carriacou, which extends to hard hit Windward so they can get their lives back in order as soon as possible. Their spirit is not diminished and they deserve assistance, as we know them to be good, hard-working people who are full of gratitude.

When Tradition wraps up charters at the end of July, she will sail to Carriacou loaded with relief supplies. We ask for the story of Carriacou to be shared and for donations large or small, anything to help our friends and the incredible people of the island.

In the spirit of a traditional Carriacou sloop launch…
“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” Henry Ford

19/07/2024

It’s always a good feeling when you know you are making a difference in a positive way. All of the people coming together to organize aid and donating to help Carriacou in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl is inspiring but there’s a long way to go... There is still a great need for lots of things including building supplies, tents, mattresses, solar lights and fuel to highlight some.

We will continue to help our friends and the people of the island for as long as needed as many helped Anguilla after Hurricane Irma - the difference here is their situation is much worse as far as infrastructure goes. Imagine a beautiful, peaceful, quiet island going to over 95% homeless in less than an hour.l after an already terrifying natural disaster event. We have not heard a complaint yet from the people there and they are working hard with what they have to survive, clean-up, repair and rebuild.

Please help us continue to help them by either donating or sharing with others. If you dontate goods in Anguilla or Sint Maarten, they are getting shipped to Carriacou. If you donate money, needed relief items are purchased by Laurie and shipped to Carriacou. WE CAN’T SLOW DOWN! Thank you very much to those helping with this important cause. It is invaluable. ❤️🇬🇩

To donate online, use the button on our website https://tradition-sailing.com/ or get in touch with Deb at 264-476-7245 or [email protected]

18/07/2024

To those interested in the Caribbean, its people, its culture, and in helping when an entire island community has been devastated, please keep reading. Tradition Sailing continues to collect donations and funds to get directly to Carriacou in their time of extreme need after Hurricane Beryl on July 1st.

There has been an outpouring of love and assistance however, they need more and will for a while... We communicate with folks on the island and have an idea of what’s going on and what their needs are and remain very grateful to those who’ve helped so far and share the news of their need for help. We’ll give a more detailed update soon on Tradition team’s efforts and movements of relief items. In the meantime, please continue to keep Carriacou top of mind, in your heart and share with others so a maximum amount of assistance may continue to flow their way whether monetary or via donation of goods. If you’d like an idea of just how destructive the storm was on their beautiful island, see this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC37bbcGT7Q The majority of it shows beloved Windward, birthplace of Tradition and home to many great friends, fishermen and boat builders. A little of the video shows Tyrell Bay, where Tradition moors and gets maintenance work done. Pictured are before and after of two villages that are our homes away from home in Carriacou, L’Esterre and Windward.
❤️🇬🇩
If you’d like to donate money for Deb and Laurie to purchase from the much needed items list and get to Carriacou, use the button on Tradition’s website https://tradition-sailing.com or contact Deb at 264-476-7245 or [email protected]. THANK YOU, each and everyone!
