Greetings from Carriacou! Almost every year, some of Tradition’s maintenance requires pitch. Here we have boiling pitch being applied to the very deck you’ll walk on... Once the pitch cools, the area is smoothed out, painted and painted, and did you know Traditon’s deck even has sand on it? That helps keep the deck from being slippery. Back to the pitch... It comes from the La Brea Pitch Lake in Trinidad, the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world. Once these necessary steps are taken to keep our Caribbean Queen in excellent condition, beautification will start (aka her pretty red and white paint) and then she’ll sail back to Anguilla in time to have some fun again, starting in December. ❤️⛵️#TraditionSailingAnguilla #adventureawaits #sailing #Carriacousloop #Anguilla
Imagine a place beautiful like Anguilla but hilly, with a smaller population and not really geared toward tourism, but more so to their residents and to visiting boaters as a destination due to the many nearby islands and for their marina hub for boat maintenance and repairs. That’s #Carriacou in short but there’s more to it. Their culture is rich and apparent; residents take pride in their homes, yards, roads, cemeteries, schools, churches and businesses. The island’s last major hurricane was in 2004, and 20 years later they are suffering more devastation than has been seen since Hurricane Janet in 1955. Now Carriacou is nearly literally flattened as of July 1, 2024. 🇬🇩Have a look at our pictures over of years spent in Carriacou, then aftermath drone photography from the media of places forever gone or changed after the terrifying wrath of Hurricane Beryl. 🇬🇩With the majority homeless, no electric yet, no running water and major cleanup needed, they need as much help as possible. They’re exposed to elements. They need to rebuild almost everything and replace almost everything. Businesses and jobs are gone. 🇬🇩Tradition is grateful to those who have helped/are helping in making things better as quickly as possible for people in Carriacou – THANK YOU. We’ve vowed to continue to raise funds via tradition-sailing.com, make requests and will be doing leg work to get needs met there. We have a trusted network. Please continue to share the story of Hurricane Beryl in Carriacou, where they had the eye of the storm and thought their house made it, only to retreat for the back half which took everything they’ve worked their lives for. These people are loving, caring, hard-working people who do not ask for anything. PLEASE CONTINUE TO HELP US HELP THEM or reach out to any connections you may have to help them. Can Home Depot ship them some building supplies? Let’s do it! We must think outside of the box and not be afraid to ask for the sake
Happy Anguilla Day! 🧡🤍🩵 #TraditionSailingAnguilla #HappyAnguillaDay #Anguilla
Here’s a glimpse into the Friday night’s Saveurs des Caraibes artisinal market that was set up along the harbor in Gustavia, St. Barth where Tradition was anchored alongside her fellow wooden Caribbean sailing vessels for the annual West Indies Regatta, held April 26 - 28. The artisanal market had a circus troupe who were entertaining throughout Friday evening to both adults and children. The tented, open-air market sold goods from around the Caribbean and over last weekend, a table of items from Anguilla. Tradition arrived to the market with chocolate and salt from Anguilla Sands And Salts Oasis, artwork from Lynne Bernbaum Art, hand-sewn totes, wristlets and wine bags by Honey Butter and Cream, flavored rums from Glo’s Rums and books from artist/author Jo-Anne Mason and author Trudy Nixon of TRUE Anguilla. The Anguilla table also sold Tradition Sailing shirts and the Anguilla Tourism Board provided literature, pens, pencils and bags and notepads. In case you’re wondering, the hit seller on Friday night was Anguilla Sands & Salts espresso dark chocolate bars. This is just the first look into the fantastic weekend affair in St. Barth centered around the wooden sailing boats and the preservation of the craft. Check back for scenes from the Saturday and Sunday raft-ups and sailing days with Captain Thomas at the helm, the Saturday and Sunday night market events and some sight-seeing of our neighboring, hospitable and beautiful host island of St. Barth. Thank you to the Anguilla vendors for allowing us to sell their items at the market to represent Anguilla. #TraditionSailingAnguilla #WestIndiesRegatta #StBarth #Anguilla
