Happy !

The other day we posted a video of a Spotted Sandpiper chick foraging along the shoreline. But- Spotted Sandpipers (SPSA) are one of only 1-2% of bird species worldwide that practice polyandry?

In fact, there is almost a complete gender role reversal in this species. Female SPSA arrive on the breeding grounds first so as to establish and defend their territories in bloody disputes ( - female testosterone levels often ⬆️ SEVENfold!) Male SPSA then arrive after the females and create sub-territories within a female’s territory. Males are the primary caregivers, looking after their offspring from incubation to fledging, which in turn allows the female to seek out another mate (or, 3). Researchers have documented female SPSA starting as many as FOUR different families with FOUR different males in a single season! We’re tired just thinking about it. 😂

Unlike most other species, the female SPSA is larger than the male and with more extensive spotting on the chest. Bird banders can discern whether the bird is male or female from how numerous these spots may or may not be. In the photo below, the female is to the left of center and the male is directly below her (bottom L corner).

Not all Spotted Sandpipers are polyandrous though. Some individuals practice monogamy all of the time; others are monogamous at least some of the time.

A goal for my trip to California was to take an excursion with Dana Point Whale Watching. I followed this company for some time on social media and was impressed with its ability to find wildlife on each trip. My dear friend Miya Yoshida and I have talked about taking on this adventure for some time...

President Biden recently signed the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act, which reauthorizes the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA)🎉

The NMBCA's international grant program is a key source of funding for projects promoting the conservation of neotropical migratory birds in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean🌎

Are you a prospective applicant or a current grantee?
📌Please note one change going forward: grant requests can now be matched by partner contributions at a 2-to-1 ratio (it was previously a 3 to 1 ratio). This change is intended to improve access to funding and encourage collaboration across the global bird conservation community

For more information about NMBCA grant opportunities, visit: https://ow.ly/Z6rV50Sa8zx

Road Bay and Sandy Ground are more famous for bars and boats than birds. It is one of my favorite spots to watch seabirds on Anguilla. Local baitfish known as Sprats are often present, providing a feast for pelicans, bo***es, terns, and an occasional heron.

Great tips for new birders!

Originally published October 2011; updated December 2022. It's one of the first eye-openers for people who are just starting to pick up birdwatching: the experience of hearing a birder call out names of birds in quick succession as a flock passes by, seemingly without looking. But like anything, it

Take a Walk on the Wild Side...

Nature Explorers Anguilla is the first ecotourism company on Anguilla providing wildlife tours to the island's wetlands. Formed in 2010, Nature Explorers Anguilla provides an excellent opportunity for visitors and residents to experience the natural world of this island nation.

Whether a bird watcher, photographer, or a little bit of both, Nature Explorers Anguilla helps clients investigate beyond the island’s glorious beaches, and observe the less travelled areas rich with incredible flora and fauna.

Anguilla’s Wildlife

Anguilla boasts more than 20 wetlands and over 130 species of birds that live here for all or part of the year. During the peak migratory periods, it is not uncommon to see a wide variety of species as they make their way to and from their breeding grounds along the Atlantic Flyway.
