Original Use: The bunker was built in the 1980s under the regime of Enver Hoxha, Albania's communist dictator. It was designed to be a nuclear fallout shelter for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and key government officials.

Museum Transformation: In 2016, it was converted into a museum to shed light on Albania's communist past, focusing on the secret police (Sigurimi), surveillance, and repression.

What to See

Architecture: The museum is located underground in a labyrinthine bunker with over 20 rooms and a dome-like structure.

Lekursi Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Lëkurësit, is a historical fortress situated on Lekursi Hill, just behind Saranda, Albania. Built in 1537 by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the castle was strategically positioned to oversee the harbor and the Saranda-Butrint road, serving as a defense against Venetian forces.
The castle features a square layout with two round towers at its northwestern and southeastern corners. Constructed from limestone, the walls are approximately 2 meters thick and rise up to 7 meters in height.
Today, Lekursi Castle is renowned for offering panoramic views of Saranda, the Ionian Sea, and the surrounding landscapes, including the islands of Ksamil and the Butrint Lagoon. Within its walls, there is a restaurant with a spacious outdoor terrace, making it a popular spot for visitors, especially around sunset.
Access to the castle is free. Visitors can reach it by a 45-minute to one-hour hike from Saranda, or by car via a well-maintained road with ample parking. Taxis are also available, with a round trip costing approximately 1,000 lekë.

Unique Beauty: The vivid colors of the water, combined with the surrounding lush greenery, create a magical and serene setting.
Mystery: The depth of the spring has not been fully explored, adding an element of intrigue.
