He is considered the most prominent historical figure in all Albanian history. He is their national hero and known as the Dragon of Albania. He grew up in the town of Kruja during the 15th century.
Kastrioti-Skanderbeg reportedly made his historic pronouncement: "I have not brought you liberty, I found it here, among you." In March of 1444, during a meeting of Albanian princes in the city of Lezhë, he was elected commander-in-chief of the Albanian army.
A battle against the Turks in 1467 left Kastrioti-Skanderbeg victorious but concerned; because of his advancing years he was finding warfare increasingly difficult. Steps to replace the 63-year-old general as commander-in-chief proved in vain; the Albanian commander contracted malaria and died in Lezhë on January 17, 1468.

Many legends and tales have tried to explain the origin of the name “land of eagles” as Albania it is called by its people and the links between the eagles with their country. The Eagle is one of Albania’s most important symbols which is used in the national flag of the country, in postcards, traditional costumes and handicrafts, literature and history.

Among many others, an old legend says that one day a young boy was hunting in the mountains and saw a big eagle flying above his head with a snake in its mouth. The eagle took the snake at her nest in the sharp peak of a cliff and left it there. The boy became curious and got near to the nest to see the shelter of the eagle by near.

The young boy noticed that inside the nest was a baby eagle which was in danger because the snake was still alive and ready to pinch and poison it. The boy felt compassion for the little baby eagle and decided to kill the snake. He drew an arrow by killing the snake and then he took the baby eagle with him and headed home.

While walking, the big eagle flies around him and begs him to give her baby, by saying: “Why are you taking my baby away?”. The boy replied: “I saved its life so now and after the baby eagle is mine” but the mother eagle was feeling broken hearted and promised him a reward. “Please give me back my baby and I will give you as a reward the sharpness of my eyes and the strength of my arms. You will be strong and impregnable and people will call you in my name.”

The boy accepted and gave back the baby eagle. As the years passed, the young boy grew up being recognized by its land people as strong and heroic. During these years, the little eagle grew up too and accompanied the young boy in hunting for wild animals in wild forests and in each battle with enemies.

The locals were amazed by the bravery of the man and used to call him “The son of the eagles” and the lands where they lived were called The Land of Eagles (Shqiperi) – Eagle (Shqipe).

Defined by its castle, roads paved with chunky limestone and shale, imposing slate-roofed houses and views out to the Drina Valley, is a magical hillside town described beautifully by Albania's most famous author, Ismail Kadare (b 1936), in Chronicle in Stone. There has been a settlement here for 2500 years, though these days it's the 600 'monumental' Ottoman-era houses in town that attract visitors. The town is also synonymous for Albanians with former dictator Enver Hoxha, who was born here and ensured the town was relatively well preserved under his rule; though he is not memorialised in any way here today. Far less touristy than Berat, the town is equally as charming and has several fascinating sights, as well as some excellent accommodation options.

How was the "Blue Eye" water spring created?

There are different legends that strive to explain the creation process of the Blue Eye, a small water spring situated in Delvina District, in southern Albania. The water source has gained thousands of tourists each year which get amazed by the form of the water spring which stems from the ground and the water has different colors in small distances.

One of the oldest legends for the Blue Eye is related to a known symbol of ancient Albanians: the snake. According to it, “once upon a time the ancient Illyrians noticed that a heavy wind storm hit their land and from the ground of the sea came out a giant snake. The snake ate people and animals and used to destroy the crops. A brave old man took his donkey and loaded a sack of touchwoods on it with a plan to destroy the horrible snake.

He went near to the cave where the snake used to stay and set fire to the touchwoods. As soon as the snake saw the donkey he ate it and the touchwoods continued to burn inside its body. The beast screamed loudly and begged to the sea and mountains to save him. Being in a state of agony, the snake used to shake its tail onto the mountains nearby. As the legend says, one of the snake’s eyes fell at the place where nowadays the Blue Eye is situated and he still keeps crying.
