An update on the Valbona Pass: Locals assume it will take another one to two weeks for the summer route to open.

Once more the hiking community is mourning the loss of life on Valbona Pass. On Tuesday morning a group of Swiss hikers set out from Theth to cross over to Valbona. One 30 year old hiker slipped on the snow and fell to his death. After being informed by locals, rescue services and volunteers evacuated the others. Our thoughts are with the family and friends who suffered this tragic loss.

To many visitors of our mediterranen country, it comes as a surprise that the alpine regions see pockets of snow until July. On Valbona Pass, snow block may last until late May or more likely early June. Zbulo's tours are timed accordingly. Taken on June 8th 2021 by our guide Adriatik Gacaferi, the photo shows unprecedented levels of snow on the summer route last year.

While being a regular alpine path in summer, the Valbona Pass becomes treacherous under snow cover. Crossing the snow blocked pass can be extremely dangerous. Inform yourself about present conditions, consider twice skipping a local guide and/or technical equipment (crampons, ice pick). Beware that the so-called winter route includes a steep 65° firn slope.

Being the only connection between the Accursed Mountains two most popular valleys, the Valbona Pass is arguably Albania's most frequented hiking route. Our guides dubbed it the "Coca Cola Trail", referring to the improvised cafes and sight of inexperienced and under-equipped visitors, which have become a reason for concern in the last years.

Albania is a mountainous country with no lack of attractive mountain destinations in spring and late autumn. Consider the lush green valleys and blossoms in the South over the longer lasting grey winter atmosphere of the alpine North. Do your reading or get inspired by our tours in the Southern highlands, coastal mountains and on the Albanian Coastal Path.

A very similar accident ended tragically four years ago and there's been a string of incidents this year. Zbulo would gladly contribute ideas and experience to awareness raising and safety efforts taken by the responsible authorities. The placement of warning signs would only be a first step, we're reaching out to guidebook authors and calling on you to make influencers aware.
