On just one day in 2014, three Norwegian “extreme travellers” visited 19 countries - that’s more than most people visit in a lifetime.

The trio started on 22 September in Greece, crossing the border into Bulgaria at midnight and then immediately on to North Macedonia and into Kosovo by 1 am.

By 10 am, they had rushed through four more ex-Yugoslav republics, and by 12:24, they had notched up not just Austria and Hungary, but also Czechia and Slovakia.

Then they caught a flight to western Germany, crossed into each of the three Benelux countries, reaching France by 7 pm, Switzerland around 9.30 pm and Liechtenstein 23 minutes before midnight.

With a bit more luck, the Norwegians would have continued into Italy, racking up 20 countries in 24 hours. Still, 19 countries in under 24 hours is an impressive achievement. Even if there wasn’t much time to soak up the local culture at any of the stops.
