60 million years ago, in the third geological period, the Ta**us Mountains rose and the Anatolian Plateau in the northern part was compressed and volcano activities began. Hasadağı, Erciyes and Göllüdağ, located between these two, sprayed lava into the region. The ashes accumulated on the plateaus formed a soft layer. The upper part of this layer was covered with a thin layer of lava consisting of hard basalt. Then the basalt cracked and broke into pieces. Rainwater seeped through the cracks and eroded the layer over time. Cooling and warming air and winds were also involved in this formation. In this way, hard basalt rocks with cones, or hats, were formed. These different and interesting rocks were called fairy chimneys by the people.. 🇹🇷

The Derinkuyu underground city is an ancient multi-level underground city in the Derinkuyu district in Cappadocia region, Turkey, extending to a depth of approximately 85 metres (279 ft).

It is believed that the underground city was built as a shelter that is not to be seen from above, for the Christian community to escape from the pressure of the Roman Empire and Arabs.

It is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores.

This underground city contains many sophisticated structures like ventilation, church, stable, and cellar. It is carved from pliable volcanic ash rock called tuff.
