Geghard monastery is one of the most unique and famous architectural structures of medieval Armenia. The entire complex – with overland and hewn-in churches, and dozens of rock monastic cells and stone crosses – creates a wonderful harmony, blending together with the unique nature of the Geghard valley. Although there are many references to the existence of a monastery here in the early Middle Ages, the first documented one goes back to 1219 (the period of princes Ivan and Zakare Zakarian). After the Zakarians, the initiative to build the Geghard monastery fell on the princes Proshyan, through whom the architect Gandzak built two churches carved into the cliffs. The first cave church was built in the middle of the 8th century, commissioned by Prince Prosh Proshyan. Near the north wall of the rock, a reservoir is hewn where healing water flows from underground springs. A barely visible inscription can be read on the column, in one dark corner of the church: “Remember master Gandzak”.
There was a second church hewn in 1283. The coat-of-arms of the Proshyans is carved on the rock before the church: two lions and an eagle holding a lamb in their claws. Finally, in 1288, a vault was carved into the rocks that were commissioned by Prince Papak, the son of Prince Prosh.
The monastery was originally called Ayrivank, which means “cave monastery”, For several centuries the spear which a Roman soldier used to pierce Christ – brought to Armenia by the Apostle St. Thaddaeus in the 1st century – was kept here. Thus the monastery received a second and its current name, Geghard (meaning “spear”).
Geghard monastery is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list
