Learn more about parrotfish

You can find parrotfish in relatively warm and shallow waters, predominantly in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions such as Bonaire. They play an important role in the maintenance and health of marine ecosystems. Let’s learn more about the fascinating parrotfish.

Appearance: Parrotfish have bright colors such as blues, oranges, reds and greens. Some parrotfish change their colors and patterns as they mature. The most distinctive feature is their beak-like jaws. They look like a parrot’s beak, and that’s where their name comes from. This beak helps them to scrape and bit algae off coral and other hard surfaces.

Reef cleaners: Parrotfish feed on algae that can smoother corals. Keeping the reef clean allows coral to grow, and this helps maintain a healthy coral reef. They also and use their powerful beaks to break away dead parts of the coral.

Sand creators: As parrotfish consume coral, they excrete fine white sand. This contributes to the sand you find on tropical beaches.

Mucus sleeping bags: Some species of parrotfish weave a cocoon of mucus around themselves at night time as protection from predators.

S*x changes: Many parrotfish change s*x depending on their social and environmental conditions. For example, that start as a female and transition to a male during their lifetime.

Unfortunately some parrotfish species are facing threats from overfishing and habitat destruction. It’s essential parrotfish numbers don’t drop as they are vital to the health of marine ecosystems. Keep an eye out for them next time you’re underwater.

Learn more about blue tangs before diving in Bonaire.

Blue tangs (Acanthurus coeruleus) are one of the many fish you will see while diving in Bonaire and other tropical and subtropical waters. Learn more about these colorful fish. Here are five facts to get you started:

🐟 Celebrity fish: You have probably seen blue tang in the movies. If you have seen Finding Nemo, then you will recognize Dory as a blue tang.

🐟 Diet and feeding habits: Blue tangs are omnivores and feed on algae but also plankton. They use their teeth to scrape algae off rocks and coral, making them important for algae control in reef ecosystems.

🐟 Unique coloring: Blue tangs are a vibrant blue color with yellow fin and tail markings on the adults. The juveniles are yellow with blue stripes and spots. Blue tangs can control the intensity of their coloring and change from light blue to deep purple.

🐟 Habitat: Blue tangs are typically found in coral reefs at depths of around 200 feet. You’ll often find them in large schools as they are social fish.

🐟 Sharp spines: Another name for blue tangs is surgeonfish. They have sharp spines where the tail joins the body, which cut you (like a surgeon). These spines contain toxins which won’t kill you but will cause irritation.

Blue tangs are colorful reef cleaners that you can enjoy seeing in Bonaire. They’re great to photograph, particularly the larger schools of fish. Remember not to touch them, but rather watch them cleaning the algae off the rocks and admire their role in the reef ecosystem.

Why are lionfish a problem for the health of coral reefs?

Lionfish are a species of fish native to the Indo-Pacific, but have become an invasive species in other parts of the world. Their presence in non-native waters, such as around Bonaire, poses significant challenges to local ecosystems and the health of coral reefs. Here’s why:

🐟 Desecrating native species numbers: Lionfish are voracious predators that consume a wide variety of fish and invertebrates, many of which are important to the health of coral reefs. Their eating habits can disrupt the balance of the reef ecosystem.

🐟 Lack of Natural Predators: In their invasive range, lionfish have few natural predators, allowing their populations to grow unchecked. This reeks further havock on local fish populations and the overall reef ecosystem.

🐟 Competition for Food: Lionfish compete with native predatory fish for food. This competition can reduce the populations of native predators, further unbalancing the ecosystem.

🐟 Impact on Coral Health: The reduction in herbivorous fish due to lionfish predation can lead to an increase in algae growth on corals. Algae can outcompete corals for space and light, leading to a decline in coral health.

The invasion of lionfish poses a significant threat to the health of these Bonaire reefs but conscientious conservation efforts help keep lionfish numbers low. Lionfish culling (removal of lionfish by divers) and public education campaigns are ongoing to control their population and help reduce their impact.

You can read about Bonaire's lionfish culling in this article https://tinyurl.com/2e88r7vh
