It seems my last post got people thinking and it also showed that people may have different understanding of terms like WLL and MBS.

Carabiner manufacturers are required to print the Minimum Breaking Strength on carabiners if they want the carabiners to be certified against EN, NFPA, … standards. This is the strength below which they should not break in normal use.

Shackle manufacturers go the other way. Rather than the force required to break them, they print the Working Load Limit - or the load they should be able to withstand in lifting operations all day, every day, over and over until they fail an inspection.

The bow shackle shown here has a WLL of 2T (or 20kN) and, to meet the relevant standards, it should withstand a force of 6 times this = 12T (or 120kN).

The carabiner has an MBS of 50kN (5T) and the manufacturer states that it should not exceed 1/4 of this in use = 12.5kN (or 1.25T).

I guess the next question is if the shackle has a safety factor of 6:1 applied, what should we apply to carabiners?
