Why travel with Antarpply?
IAATO regulations stipulate that you can only land 100 passengers at a time in Antarctica. The MVUshuaia accommodates a maximum of 90 passengers which means more time on land for you. #antarctica #tripofalifetime #MVUshuaia #antarpplyexpeditions #SmallShipCruising #expeditioncruise

Some young male Southern elephant seals come on shore in Antarctica. They use their time to rest and engage in show fighting. This sparring is good training for them on their future path to become a beachmaster in charge of thirty to a hundred females, fighting off other males.
Feathers are of ultimate importance to birds. And though they can be replaced, if they are to function properly they have to be kept in good shape. Preening keeps each feather in top condition, but this can also be a social behavior. These blue-eyed shags caress each other while aligning their feathers. And they are so caught up with the activity that they don´t seem to be bothered by the noise of their busy neighbors, the Gentoo penguins.
Ushuaia
Happy birthday Ushuaia! The southernmost city of the world, gateway to Antarctica and the base for our expeditions - was founded on October 12, 1884, by Augusto Lasserre and is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel surrounded by the mountain range of the Martial Glacier, in the Bay of Ushuaia.
The Lemaire Channel is 11 km long and just 1,600 metres wide at its narrowest point. The steep rocky mountains and narrow passage funnel through wind and icebergs, but can also protect it from the elements, so it is as still as a lake.
There is quite a diversity of algae and lichens in biological soil crusts in the South Shetland Islands. Here at Barrientos Island in the Aítcho Island group, the Gentoo Penguin colony is covered in spectacular green algae.
Millions of sea birds come to the Antarctic every summer to feed during the long hours of daylight on the rich supplies of food in the sea. Their real problem is finding land to nest on. Some nest around the coast of the continent. Some nest on islands beyond the reach of the pack ice. These lovely Cape petrels, also called Pintado petrels, nest in huge numbers in the South Shetland Islands.
A friendly sparring session during the summer months on a beach in the South Shetland Islands. Young elephant seal bulls are testing their skills and force as they grow up in groups of young males.
The sea ice cover is one of the key components of the polar climate system. It has been a focus of attention in recent years, largely because of a strong decrease in the Arctic and modeling results that indicate that global warming could be amplified on account of ice-albedo feedback. This results from the high reflectivity (albedo) of the sea ice compared to ice-free waters.
Shown below are up-to-date satellite observations of the sea ice cover of the Antarctic, where huge seasonal changes occur. The color-coded animation is displaying the last 2 weeks of the daily sea ice concentrations in the Southern Hemisphere. The different shades of gray over land indicate the land elevation with the lightest gray being the highest elevation.
We loved to watch these Gentoo penguins feed their chicks.
The hatching-to-fledging period of Gentoo penguins lasts from two to three months. During this time both parents nurture the chicks.
Penguins, like all other birds, have no teeth, hence they are unable to chew. However, penguins' tongues have spin protuberances that point backwards toward the esophagus. This helps to prevent the prey, such as fish and krill, from resisting being swallowed. And what helps the adult birds to catch prey is also handy for the chicks. The penguin´s lower mandible has the capacity to expand to a large width, and this also helps in swallowing the food provided by the parent birds.
Antarpply_Expeditions_Orcas
We were thrilled to encounter this small pod of orcas in the northern Gerlache Strait. It is hard to imagine now, but 60 years ago it was generally thought that killer whales hunting in packs were the most ruthless predators in the sea. Eyewitness accounts of their coordinated attacks on whales and seals leave no doubt that they are particularly fond of flesh. But their image has softened since, and people call them orca, the species name in the scientific binomial Orcinus orca.
Our voyages to Antarctica start from the port of Ushuaia in Argentina, the city that claims the title of world's southernmost city. The bustling town is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel surrounded by the mountain range of the Martial Glacier, in the Bay of Ushuaia. Besides being an administrative center, it is a light industrial port and tourist hub. Ushuaia is located roughly 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
