STUDIO CALAS

STUDIO CALAS Studio Calas operates as an architecture collective investigating socio cultural practices.
(1)

The projects emerge around the blurry boundaries of architecture, theory, urbanism, art, digitalisation, interior design and curatorial works. STUDIO-CALAS provides an interface between architecture and architectural intervention. Utilizing a variable and dynamic approach, the content provided by the project initiator is processed and communicated. The socio-cultural approach allows a holistic vie

w of the specific task, ranging from project development to PR, from participatory systems to content placement. The mode of operation is focused on descriptive analysis and a continuous exchange and communication with the various project participants. Through a high-context, solution-oriented approach, possible strategies and paths are gradually found.

GRIESER PLATZ
The square vocabulary
Square vocabulary as framing for public furnishings - which can be flexibly positioned and supplemented/modified according to requirements.
Square vocabulary as a basis for appropriation and participation.
Given grammar ( square joints for plug-ins) which leave the "speaking" to the citizens.
Flexible placement of elements.
Multifunctional public space that stimulates diversity and creates identity.

GRIESER PLATZ
Design proposal for Grieser Platz, Bolzano/ITA
Starting Point: The present Grieser Platz is a non-place.
When looking at Grieser Platz today, one thing dominates: motorized individual traffic (MIV). The numerous parking spaces, the oversized roadways and the heavy traffic volume have turned Grieser Platz into a non-place or a non-square. Strolling, high-quality stay as well as an inviting commercial and gastronomic activity are currently scarcely possible or available. The public spatial atmospheric quality of the Grieser Platz of past times has deteriorated, which is why the repair of this important square in the rural-urban fabric of Bolzano seems very important.

SLAB+

slab+ is an expandable seating design that redefines the traditional dogmas of Bèton Brut. Using new possibilities of advanced digital manufacturing technology slab+ transforms Béton Brut into a gently shaped object.

The defining element of modernist architecture, the "concrete slab", is transformed into a complex 3D shape, which has been made possible by modern 3D printing technology. Two identical slabs, each 55cm wide, 90cm long and 4cm thick - the dimensions of a conventional bench - serve as starting point for the furniture design. While the upper plate adapts to the flexible laissez-faire, the lower one acts as a static support. An act of symbiosis made possible by the interplay of modern fabrication methods. Digital tools meet analogue user behaviour. Sitting, leaning and supporting oneself on the armrest leads to a sequence of differently shaped upper slabs. Repetitive heights meet ergonomic principles and create an inviting seating furniture.
The form of the lower slab follows the lines of forces inside the structure. It is designed so that it optimally uses the physical properties of concrete in order to reduce consumption of material.
Like a "tailor-made suit" that is precisely matched to the dimensions of the body, the seating furniture - both as individual elements or combined to a lively mènage of seating components - demonstratively displays its formal simplicity. The interplay of necessity and comfort leads to this furniture series produced by the renowned Progress 3D Innovation company in Bressanone/ITA.

slab+ pushes the possibilities of Béton Brut further by using advanced digital manufacturing technology. The formal harshness and strict serialism is broken, but the character remains. The mutation to the Concrete Beau, the lovely concrete, is completed.

NATURE BURIAL
Municipal cemetery Völkermarkt.

Fragments of circles and loops outline the design approach for the nature burial of the municipal cemetery of Völkermarkt in Carinthia, Austria. These geometries represent the cycle of our life and death. Gentle and modest, to linger and to commemorate. In connection with the surroundings and those who have been close to us.
The natural burial Völkermarkt design manifests itself as a spatial-atmospheric as well as expandable space. For this purpose, the simple pathway is intended to offer a sequence of different resting and memorial situations and to provide an integration of already existing elements. Existing trees and the urn wall are incorporated and gently embedded in the design.
The gently curving paths made of compacted earth/crushed stone or drainage concrete lead from the main access to the individual places of contemplation. The latter consist of a commemoration and orientation area, five urn circles around trees, a meadow and an urn wall path. The different spatial characteristics of the individual sites contribute to an intimate, yet coherent spatial experience. The orientation of the areas allows both seclusion and togetherness. The different alignments and related views to the church/chapel, reservoir and forest contribute to these qualities. The visitors of the park experience a place of being to commemorate the deceased.
The choice of materials in earthy tones blends considerately into the surroundings, creating a harmonious overall picture.

STRETCHED
A reinterpretation of local “Streckhöfe” typologies in Burgenland for a housing project

Villages and multilocal lifestyles have a friction-related impact on rural areas. Also in Burgenland near Trausdorf, where we are working on a culture-driven housing project. Dealing with what exists in the nearby built environment, helps to understand dynamics and (almost lost) local building cultures. Therefore, we investigated the Streckhöfe typology of the region to find elements, necessities and characteristics which can be translated into a contemporary living context.
The design outline of the row house project follows the stretched living space agglomeration along the as well stretched courtyards. This allows the ground floor area to be open and easily accessible from multiple entrances. A flexibility of space which was always the core of every Streckhof. Therefore, the “stretched court” was also able to occupy less soil, since the extension followed a linear and vertical volumetry. While the ground floor area hosts daily living functions, the upper floor
makes space for private rooms. A simple but convincing agglomeration which was entirely merged in our project. Finally, a stretched but contemporary adaptable living environment.
