With over 30 years combined experience of working in the tourism and disability sector within the UK we have now brought our passion out to the Alps as a base for all to enjoy.
The summer weather has definitely arrived with us here in Mallnitz. We're making the most of it and getting the house ready for our summer guests with some grass cutting, window washing and of course treating the wood for whatever the weather throws at it over the next 12 months.
We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to speak with us over the last few days. Now we spend the weekend with our daughter and we will be back at the computer on Monday to follow up with all the wonderful conversations we have had.
We might have seemed to be quiet lately with our social media but we've been busy working hard in the background.
This week we present ourselves to the wider community with our stand at the Integra Trade Fair 2024. We are here in Wels exhibiting until Friday so come and see us at stand C130.

The lights are up and the snow is falling.
Winter is well on its way and we're all starting to get excited for Christmas. It might be a bit early but with 27cm snow predicted for us in the next 24hrs I didn't fancy going up on the ladder after tomorrow to put these up.

Spent the day getting the house ready for our guests arriving. Not a bad view to look at while having a quick coffee in between cleaning ❄️☕🧹
Where we once had grass we now have a garden full of snow, and soon the fence will vanish underneath it. What's even better than the snow down here in the village is the powder Patrick is currently playing in up on the Ankogel ☃️🏂❄️
New and exciting flight information released from Ryan Air this week. From March onwards there will be twice weekly flights from Stansted into Klagenfurt with prices as low as £9.99 🤪. From Klagenfurt it is possible to touch down on the runway and 1.5hrs later be sat in the comfort of our living room, surrounded by 3000m peaks in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some last minute Christmas card writing today while we eagerly await the final openings of the winter.
The langlaufen routes are already open for this year, as is the 4km sledging route and the winter walking routes have been pisted and offer beautiful walks. The Ankogel opens its lifts on Saturday with plenty of snow on and off piste, the ice rink is being flooded as we speak and we are very excided for the upcoming winter.
Were getting into the festive spirit here in Mallnitz. We've spent the day hanging lights and baubles on the tree ready for the advent season. In between the work we visited the villages advent festivities and found out all about next years exciting events.

We are greatful to of been able to attend the ribbon cutting marking the opening of the accessible hiking trail within the European sanctuary of the Stappitzer See.
Alot of hard work has been put into ensuring a level surface for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Together with newly refurbished toilets, sensory activity points, parking and information boards a great nature experience is available to everyone.
We are looking forward to the official opening tommorow of the accessible trail here in mallnitz.
The newly surfaced path together with tactile information boards in German, English and Braille, dedicated disabled parking places and a newly refurbished accessible toilet will open up our beautiful area for everyone to experience.

Another week of snow fall and we've been out and about in the fresh snow sledging, skiing hiking and of course playing.

Its been a full family effort this weekend clearing snow and decorating the house for Christmas.
❄️The new snow blower has had its first of many runs out to clear around the house ❄️
🎄The tree with the help of our little elf is taking pride of place in the window 🎄
⛷ The ski routes are being prepared and with every new snowfall their opening gets closer and closer ⛷
☃️We've even had time to play and build a snowman to greet everyone who passes by ☃️
We are looking forward to the upcoming winter and are hopeful that we can welcome guests back to us shortly.

A big thank you to Svetla and Family for the fab pictures of some of their adventures they got up to whilst staying with us at Houghton Haus. Great views from the Ankogel and of the Dosental with snow still lying from the winter. It looks like you had a great time.
In 2 weeks’ time we are able to open our doors once again to guests arriving from across the EU. Opening measures are already in place for the visitor attractions, bars and restaurants and they are ready and waiting to welcome you back to our beautiful mountain village.
The winter is finally releasing us from its grips, the grass is starting to grow, the sun is beginning to shine, and we are looking forward to a summer of fun. Whatever your chosen activity, whether its hiking in the mountains, hitting the trails on your bike, tackling the walls with climbing gear or taking in the beauty of the national park and its surrounding area. All of this can be done without stress and within covid guidelines to enable a fun and relaxing holiday for all.
A new set of rules are due to be in place from the 19th May for travel within the EU. They will be tied to the ECDC map for risk areas and allow entry as follows:
• green/orange: unrestricted entry
• red: entry with COVID test, vaccination, or proof of past COVID illness
• maroon: entry with COVID test, vaccination, or proof of past COVID illness PLUS quarantine required

Details and entry requirements for non-EU countries are still being drawn up but once we know we will pass it on to you.

With corona restrictions still firmly in place across the world we are looking forward, passed this winter and into what the summer can offer us.
These beautiful waterfalls of the Groppensteinschluct can be found between Mallnitz and Obervellach, the next village along from us and takes on a section of the Alp Adria long distance path.
Given the forecast for some warmer weather over the next couple of weeks they will be roaring away with dramatic volumes fueled by all the snow melt that is still lying up in the mountains.
All you can do for now is imagine the smells and the thunderous sound as your guided through the impressive walkways. This is just one of 3 spectacular gorge walks that can be found in the immediate area and there is much much more to explore besides.
This time last year we were checking out our first guests. The feedback was fabulous, and they had a wonderful time exploring the skiing and other winter activities that the area has to offer.

Unfortunately, like many the year hasn’t been what we had expected, and we haven’t been able to welcome any guests to Houghton Haus this winter. We have however managed to have a few small local adventures as a family in between the relentless snow shoveling that this winter has offered us.

Following on from our last snowy pics around the house we had further snowfall here in mallnitz. According to the ZAMG - Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik between 4 - 9th December mallnitz recieved 296.4mm of precipitation, mostly of snow.
We have had other commitments in clearing snow at our own living place and with no guests staying this has built up.
Now we have started the 'big dig' but we have many many more shovel loads of snow to move. The bonus of this big dump is now preparation has already begun on the langlaufing tracks and we've even had the sledge out for a play.
We've spent the last few days sitting out the 1st winter storm at home. Today the weather loosened enough for us to take a trip to the house and start clearing some snow. It really is a picturesque winter wonderland with plenty more snow coming this week.
Not long to wait until the start of the winter season here in Mallnitz (hopefully). The ski area is being prepared and will soon be ready to welcome you to its wide, empty slopes

As well as following the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions we are keeping up with local news and thankfully its not all Trump, Brexit and Corona. Here in Carinthia a team Tec-Innovation have created a shoe mounted senosor to enable people with visual imparents to have greater feedback from their surroundings. Check out the link below. to read it in English open with google and you can find the option for the website to be translated for you, its not perfect but you get the gist.
Eine Lavanttaler Firma hat einen Schuhsensor entwickelt, der blinde und sehbehinderte Menschen vor Hindernissen warnt. Der Sensor kann in so gut wie jeden Schuh eingebaut werden und funktioniert mit einer App, aber auch ohne. Bei einem Hindernis vibriert der Schuh und gibt einen Warnton.
Our family here at Houghton Haus are spending this week checking into the Kidz to Adultz exhibition, a virtual event dedicated to children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs together with their family's, friends and carers across the UK and afar. We are particularly keen to hear what the folks at the mountain trike company have to offer, after all were all about opening the alps to all.
