An Athens Epidaurus Festival production
Watch the video trailer here.

As the world is still reeling from the pandemic and exploring new ways to re-ignite theatre in the COVID-19 era, the Athens Epidaurus Festival invites international audiences to the most beautiful theatre of the ancient world for a live broadcast of Aristophanes’ comic masterpiece The Frogs, by acclaimed director Argyro Chioti in her Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus debut. The play includes a stellar cast of renowned Greek theatre actors and a strikingly original musical performance.

Following last year’s hugely successful live streaming of The Persians by the National Theatre of Greece, watched by over 100,000 viewers worldwide, The Frogs will be streamed live on July 10 at 21:00 Athens time (GMT +3), with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, in collaboration with Google Greece. The performance will be available worldwide (with the exception of Greece) and exclusively through livefromepidaurus.gr and at the Festival’s official YouTube channel, Athens Epidaurus Festival, free of charge, although donations are welcome. The performance will be in Greek, with English subtitles, and lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Written in 405 BC, at the end of the Golden Age of Pericles, The Frogs is one of Aristophanes’ timeless and most beloved masterworks. The play tackles the descent of god Dionysus to the Underworld, where he embarks on a quest to bring the best tragic poet back to the world of the living, in an attempt to restore theatre to its former glory. Thank to this play, culminating in an iconic scene of poetic “duel” between Aeschylus and Euripides, Aristophanes provides a scathing commentary on the bankrupt political values of his time. A delightful gem by a writer whose work remains as relevant as ever.

MUNICIPALITY OF ALONISSOS
PRESS RELEASE
The first Underwater Museum in Greece is opening in Alonissos on the 3rd of August!
Travel to Alonissos, the island of diving!

We are only a couple of weeks away from the moment when thousands of divers from Greece and all over the world will have the opportunity to dive in the first underwater museum of Greece in Alonissos, in Northern Sporades. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSpEFwSY78Y
From Monday, 3rd of August until Friday, 2nd of October 2020, amateur scuba divers and free divers will be able to visit, accompanied by diving centers, the famous shipwreck of amphorae dating to the 5th century BC and located in the seabed of the islet Peristera in Alonissos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr6ggyCh3jA
A fisherman was the first person who located the ancient shipwreck in 1985 near the western rocky shore of Peristera, at a depth of 28 m. : a large commercial vessel, possibly from Athens, sank there around 425 BC. It was loaded with thousands of wine pots (amphorae) from Mendi (ancient city in Northern Greece) and Peparithos (modern day Skopelos island), areas well known in antiquity for their wine. The heap of amphorae, extending on the seabed in 25 m., gives us an impression about the size of the ship. This shipwreck is one of the most important of classic antiquity. The excavation was conducted by archaeologists and the personnel of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which is also in charge of the opening of this underwater museum to the public.

The impressive number of amphorae, the excellent condition of the shipwreck at a depth of 21-28 meters and the beauty of the exotic sea water and the rich seabed of the area, located inside the protected area of the National Sea Park of Alonissos-Northern Sporades, make the shipwreck of Peristera a must-see destination for every diver.
The mysterious underwater world is not exclusive to divers – every visitor of Alonissos will have the opportunity to enjoy this unique experience without getting wet! In the charming alleys of the Chora of Alonissos, the Knowledge Awareness Centre (KAC) welcomes you and provides you with information on ancient shipwrecks. There, visitors can dive virtually in the sea and explore the shipwrecks like a real diver, using applications of high technology.
The pilot opening of the shipwreck of Peristera as an open underwater archeological site in summer 2020 is the result of cooperation between the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of Thessaly and the Municipality of Alonissos. This project was realized in the frame of the interregional cooperation program BLUEMED and will continue its function with financing by the Regional Operational Program of Thessaly until 2023. This landmark project is expected to put Greece on the map of global diving tourism and has already received numerous awards by the EU. It has also been presented on top global media such as the New York Times, Lonely Planet, Daily Mail, Travel & Leisure and others.
The first underwater museum in Alonissos will be open in a couple of days and is expecting all of you to share with you the secrets of the sea! Enjoy the dive!

Crete - Sense the Authentic

Region of Crete’s brand new tourism campaign

What makes Crete unique?
It’s something more than the island’s beauty, its history and its people.
It is its truth and authenticity.
Authenticity that you feel when gazing from atop Psiloritis mountain, you hear it when the Cretan lyra is playing, you taste it in the Cretan olive oil sprinkled on hand-made bread, you feel it in the warm sand, you smell it in the blooming flowers. But above all, you experience it in the unique hospitality of the island, where God Xenios Zeus was born, protector of the island and the ‘xenos’ i.e. the visitor.
The central idea of the campaign highlights the uniqueness that Crete offers to its visitor as a destination. It focuses on originality, but also on the richness of experiences offered all four seasons of the year, always with the same differentiating characteristic: Authenticity.
Through the central message "Sense the Authentic", we are building a campaign that invites visitors to discover everything that composes the unique tourism experience of Crete. It encourages the visitors to feel, to experience with all their senses the hospitality of the locals and the tourism professionals, expressed through the passion and love for their work, but also through their deeply rooted moral obligation to offer the "best" and, most importantly, the "authentic". With more than 1,000 kilometers of coastline, rich history, aromas and flavors that fascinate every visitor, Crete, the birthplace of Europe's oldest civilization, welcomes its visitors with optimism and continues to offer, especially in this unprecedented time, authentic relations with the visitors, based on mutual responsibility.

St. Arnaoutakis: "Holidays in Crete are authentic!"
Stavros Arnaoutakis, Regional Governor of Crete, points out: “Holidays are the dream that young children capture in their paintings, fun time for young people, an opportunity to relax for the older ones. Holidays in Crete are authentic! The people, their smile, the unique flavors, the cultural monuments, the nature, all compose an authentic landscape from one end of Crete to the other. The island of hospitality invites you and awaits you to live the dream, to enjoy this unique place. Crete is here and promises to offer visitors powerful experiences that awaken all senses".

Road map
The campaign, which is launched today in Greece and soon abroad, is structured around the authenticity of Crete and features 10 brand new thematic videos and 4 radio spots in 5 languages, new high quality and visually appealing images, participation in exhibitions in the main tourist markets for Crete, familiarization trips for journalists and bloggers, tour operators’ hosting, activities to attract film producers, events in Crete and abroad, a social media campaign, hardcopy and digital promotional material as well as targeted tourism surveys.
The tourism campaign of the Region of Crete is especially designed to be up-to-date and dynamic, so as to adapt to the needs of Crete and the shifting tourism conditions. It is an integral part of Region of Crete’s tourism strategy, which aims to highlight the comparative advantages of the destination and the global empowerment of the brand name "CRETE".
Window to the world
At the same time we are opening a window to the world soon with the enrichment of the content of the tourism portal of the Region of Crete www.incrediblecrete.gr, available in five languages, by adding new topics, an online game for children about the history of the island and the digital upgrade of the portal. At the same time, we are upgrading the pioneering Intelligence Interactive Systems that we have installed on the island arrival points (Heraklion Airport, Heraklion and Souda Port, Chania Central Market and Chania Port) in collaboration with the Institute of Technology and Research on Crete. These innovative applications enable the visitors to get an overall glimpse of Crete as of their first moments on the island.

Live from Epidaurus: For the first time ever a live ancient Greek drama performance streamed globally from the ancient theater of Epidaurus
Athens, July 16, 2020

Live from Epidaurus
Aeschylus, The Persians
National Theatre of Greece
With the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture & Sports
In partnership with Google Greece
Saturday, July 25, 2020
(14.00 New York time, 19.00 London time, 20.00 Paris time, 21.00 Athens time)
In Greek with English subtitles

For the first time ever, an ancient Greek drama performance will be streamed live, from the ancient theater of Epidaurus, often called “the world’s most beautiful theater.”
As countries around the world are still exploring ways to restart theater in the post-COVID era, and as most festivals across Europe have been unfortunately canceled this year, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival will still take place, albeit in a condensed form, titled Fragment, adhering to the strictest safety measures.
Within the framework of this year’s Festival, the National Theatre of Greece with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports will present to a global audience a production of Aeschylus’ drama The Persians, commemorating the 25th centennial of the Battle of Salamis. It is the first time that a major ancient Greek drama production is being livestreamed, and it is also the first time that any event is being livestreamed from Epidaurus.
On this occasion, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated: “As humanity is still challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, the first ever live streaming of an ancient Greek drama performance from the ancient theater of Epidaurus is, Ι believe, a pivotal moment. This performance of Aeschylus' The Persians, on July 25, comes at a critical juncture to underscore the universality of the principles that led to the construction of the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, 2300 years ago. The Persians, Aeschylus’ most important antiwar play, dramatizes the naval battle of Salamis, one of the most decisive battles in the history of humanity, constantly recalling the timeless values of democracy and freedom, as well as the meaning of Ancient Greek metron and moderation.”
Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture and Sports stated, “The Ministry of Culture and Sports’ goal has been to prevent COVID-19 from leaving Greece without cultural events this summer, from leaving artists without employment opportunities and from leaving local communities without additional revenues. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival and the National Theatre of Greece, two major cultural institutions supervised by the Ministry, share our beliefs and adjusted their programming in the new reality, in a creative manner.
The theater of Epidaurus, work of architect Polycleitus the Younger, is connected to the born of theater as well as healing, as it was part of a holy site dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine and father of goddess Hygeia who personifies health. Music and dramatic contests hosted at this theater were part of the patients’ therapy, as they prayed to the god for their healing. It is therefore quite fitting that in 2020, when the entire planet is being tried by COVID-19, that Greece symbolically and literally transmits globally an ancient drama performance from the holiest of places, to heal the wounds that were inflicted by this pandemic. This summer Greece sends its own message around the world that art can heal body and soul, as ancient Greek philosophers and doctors taught us. This summer, we keep safe while still enjoying art.”
As Dimitris Lignadis, Director of The Persians and Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Greece notes, “Amidst an enforced lockdown, art, and the theater once more emerged as vital human needs, as a place of refuge. The National Theatre of Greece, with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, invites the entire planet to the most beautiful theater in the world, at Ancient Epidaurus, to share and participate – even if only online – in our production of The Persians; in a ritual that takes us back to the past, reminding us of the essence and the core of existence, which is at the same time a bridge between people and cultures. Culture belongs to all humanity and humanity has the right to unity, even when conditions do not allow it.”
The play will be streamed live at 21.00 Athens time (GMT +2), in partnership with Google Greece. It will be available worldwide except Greece, exclusively through the YouTube platform, free of charge, although donations will be welcomed. All proceeds will benefit the National Theatre and Greek actors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Google will host the livestreaming and provide technical support as well as major free promotion across YouTube regarding the livestreaming event.
Peggy Antonakou, General Manager Southeast Europe for Google, stated “For the first time, YouTube will give the opportunity to an international audience, to virtually travel to the home of the theater and to the magical landscape of Epidaurus and to watch live, via live stream, the Persians by Aeschylus – one of the leading ancient Greek tragedies. And while it is true that nothing can compare with the physical presence in such a sacred place like Epidaurus, the fact that, in these adverse conditions we can share a taste of our cultural heritage and unparalleled Greek experience with people who would like to visit our country but are currently undergoing restrictions, is really important.”
The play is in Greek with English subtitles and lasts approximately 90 minutes. It will be streamed through livefromepidaurus.gr and will be also available at the websites of the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival and the Ministry of Culture and Sports, as well as the National Theatre of Greece’s YouTube channel.
