Eastman Kodak pausing film manufacturing to modernize equipment
November 21, 2024 Eastman Kodak Co., film, Kodak film

Citing increasing demand and the need to modernize its production factories, Eastman Kodak Co. temporarily paused all film production this month at its factory in Rochester, N.Y., according to company executives during last week’s quarterly earnings call.

“Our film sales have increased in motion picture and in still film and other films. So on film, right, we’re doing a shutdown in November, total shutdown,” said Jim Continenza, executive chairman of the board and CEO, of Eastman Kodak. “We’ve continued to invest in our manufacturing process, while we need to shut down completely to bring light into the dark, right? Film is made in the dark. So in November, we will be modernizing the plant, putting more investment within that, which has also caused us to use more cash in the quarter to build up inventories while we do this. But as we continue to see our commitment and our customer commitment to film, still in motion picture, we are going to continue to invest in that space and continue with that growth.”

Eastman Kodak, which produces motion picture films and film for still photography, reported early this year it was committing to film production.

According to an interview with WXXI in Rochester, Terry Taber, chief technical officer and senior vice president, Advanced Materials and Chemicals, the November shutdown was planned for a year: “We started planning this over a year ago, because we were upgrading two things: the air handling system, which also does the dehumidification for the building, and for the air supply, going into the coating machine.”

OK, so I'm annoyed!
Those of you who know the business, and who know me (Alan), know that we try to do the best we can and to give a quality service and product.
It really hurts when we are told there is something wrong with our process and we have not given out good quality.
Before someone throws rocks at us, learn about the effects of X Rays on film.
WE CANT FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!
We will try, we will tweak, we will do everything we can to get a decent result out of a bad film, but we cannot do the impossible.
Every day we see "cooked" films from overseas trips and everyday we try to fix the crappy negatives to make decent images.
I understand almost no one knows what xrays do to film - trust us, we sure know!!!!!!!!
If you have a problem, call us and let us know, but please be aware, we can't do the impossible.

RANT COMING!!!

X Rays - they will destroy your photos!
I don't know how loud to say this.

A few days ago, we scanned 8 rolls of film of a customers trip to Greece, and Europe.

2 films looked great - the rest were ruined by being scanned at airports. Yes, there were photos, but they looked awful.

The effects of X-ray vary, from wavy lines through the films to flat, low contrast photos, and all sorts of other weird effects.

PLEASE, IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING, DO NOT PUT YOUR FILM IN THE CHECKED BAGGAGE.

Put your film in your carry on bags, and ask for it to be hand inspected. I know that not every airport will do it, but x-ray fogging is cumulative, so the more times film is x-rayed, the more it damages film. If you can get just a few hand inspections, it reduces the effect.

RANT OVER!!!!!!!!

We get a lot of calls and requests about "which film is best for....."
So I decided to find a number of reviews on the films we sell and put them here.
I've had a read of them, and their comments are real, although some of the details about availabily are a bit wonky as we now have ALL our film in stock, except Colorplus 200.
Remember, peoples ideas on color, saturation and exposure can be very subjective, so you might need to do some more searching if you want more.
I hope everyone finds these various links useful, and you can always call us if you want more info.
This is a work in progress job, so it will not be finished overnight!

Film cameras are seeing another renaissance. But some new photographers are leaving something behind: the tea-colored originals that determine the life of pictures.
