THE SPONGE TRICK
The easiest way we’ve found to introduce oil into traps is to use a sponge soaked in Tasie Salmon Fish Oil. This sponge is then placed in a bait cage in the trap, but could easily be just tied in if needed. To truly test the value of the scent we decided to fish the traps with no bait whatsoever, just the oil soaked sponge. On marron it worked a treat, catching some big examples on short soak times and no bait at all.
Similar was experienced with blue crabs, although the crabs were fairly hard going at the time of testing it out, so the results were consistent with expectations. All in all it was confidence building to know that the oil alone could catch.
While we don’t suggest using too much oil type product in slow moving inland waters, we were fishing nearly rapids at the time and only used a little dash of the product for the marron. In the open ocean the more the merrier of course for bringing in the blues.
Another obvious tip would be to pre-soak baits in the oil as well, which is a time proven trick.
So when the going gets tough and you need to pull out the magic to make it happen, or you’re looking to fish more confidently each and every time, then try adding some extra scent to your crustacean efforts – it just makes sense!
