Have your kids explored the Museum of Economic Botany inside Adelaide Botanic Garden? It's full of interesting botanical curiosities that will have your children giggling and gazing in wonder.

They'll love seeing the world's largest seed, the coco-de-mer, pictured here. No points for guessing what it resembles 😆

Let them be spellbound as they gaze into the whimsical magic of the 'Grove' cabinet, and check out the incredibly life-like Papier-mâché fruit and mushrooms on display.

Also in the Museum is the Tarnanthi art exhibition, a collection of works that highlight native plants and their uses by First Nations people.

Open daily from 10am - 4pm (except 25 December).
Free entry.

Australian Nurse survives Titanic Disaster

Evelyn James, nee Marsden was the only Australian woman to survive the sinking of the Titanic.

Evelyn was born on the 15th of October 1883 at Stockyard Creek, a tiny siding on the Hamley Bridge to Balaklava railway in South Australia. Evelyn was an accomplished horsewoman who also learnt to row while visiting friends on the River Murray. She trained as a probationary nurse at the Adelaide Hospital, (later Royal Adelaide hospital), before leaving Australia for England, where she worked for the White Star Line as a nurse/stewardess. During this time, she met and fell in love with Dr William James.

When Dr James was rostered to the maiden voyage of the Titanic, Evelyn requested to be assigned as well. However, Dr James services were not required, and although he was removed from the voyage, Evelyn was obliged to remain onboard. After the Titanic struck the iceberg, she was evacuated in boat no 16. By the time her lifeboat was rescued by the Carpathia her hands were bloody from rowing.

Initially reported as missing, it was many days before her family in Australia knew of her fate.

Eventually they received a simple telegram containing just two very welcome words.

Safe. Evelyn.

Evelyn married Dr James and they returned to Australia, initially living in a new apartment in the Ruthven Mansions, which exhibited the height in modern luxury, boasting electric lights and lifts, self-opening doors and even a centralised vacuum cleaning system.

The original 3 story mansions building was built in 1911, using the new advances in concrete construcion. A 4 story addition was added in 1914– the separation of the new from the old can be seen by the differences in floor levels. Evelyn’s Retreat is in the later addition where the James apartment was situated.

Welcome to Evelyn’s Retreat, the best place to stay while visiting Adelaide, be it for business or pleasure.

Located in the historic Ruthven Mansions, this spacious 1 bedroom apartment is a stone’s throw from Rundle Mall and equidistant from the Rundle Street entertainment hub and the cultural precinct on North Terrace. If you crave a break from city life, then take the free tram to the calm oasis of the Adelaide botanic gardens. Truly, there is something here for everyone.

The apartment is completely self-contained.

It boasts a full eat-in kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, hot-plates, microwave, air-fryer, toaster, kettle and coffee pod machine.

The separate lounge room makes a nod to the apartments vintage vibe. Relax in the deep cane-sided chairs or kick back on the sofa bed while catching up on all the entertainment options provided by the smart TV.

A private bedroom contains a queen sized bed, wardrobe and en-suite bathroom with shower. Need to press a shirt? No problems, there is an iron and ironing board for your convenience.

For the utmost luxury on chilly days, the kitchen and bathroom boast underfloor heating, while there is also a heater and electric blanket on the bed if you need it.

In summer, an air-conditioner cools the living area while the bedroom is serviced by a ceiling fan - and, being an older property, the windows open to catch a breeze.

The apartment does not have a washing machine, but there is a laundrette on site.
