Scuba in the Pub 14 January 2022 at Rob Roy Hotel. Marine Ecologist Janine Baker and citizen scientist SCUBA diver Steve Simmons will present, on recent results in the long-term Dragon Search citizen science program. Since 1996, the program has provided information about seadragon distribution, relative abundance, breeding, and potential threatening processes at various locations in SA. Since 2013, members of the South Australian diving community have been involved with a Dragon Search project to identify seadragons from their facial markings. Thanks to intermittent small community grants, and the long-term efforts of volunteer divers and marine photographers, a project to identify and monitor individual seadragons has been running at Rapid Bay for 9 years, and is now expanding to other parts of the State. This presentation will discuss some of the results since 2019 from a site on Yorke Peninsula. Janine will also discuss the Diving with Dragons Code of Conduct, which was developed by Dragon Search and partner organisations during the late 1990s and has recently been updated by Green Adelaide, in conjunction with the SDFSA and divers in SA. Long term diver and photographer Paul Macdonald will discuss (via video) photography tips, relating to sensitive diving and photography practices in the presence of seadragons. The updated Code of Conduct and photo tips materials produced recently by Green Adelaide recognise the increasing numbers of interactions between divers and these fragile creatures, and seek to promote awareness within the diving community.
