Adelaide Gaol offers Guided History Tours either during the day or evening.

✅ We can tailor your tour to include morning or afternoon tea, a lecture on the history of the Gaol or specific aspects of the Adelaide Gaol site.
✅ Please note that we have a minimum of 10 people per guided History Tour.
✅ History Tours are usually about 90 minutes in duration although this can be adjusted depending on your requirements.
✅ They are suitable for all ages.
✅ Even though we accept a maximum of 30 persons per standard tour we are able to handle larger numbers.
✅ Price is $25 per person. $18 per child under 12 years. Children under 2 = free entry.

The Adelaide Gaol was built in 1841. It housed approximately 300,000 prisoners during its 147 years of operation. These prisoners consisted of men, women, and children. It also housed those unfortunates who were referred to at the time, as lunatics. The Gaol was closed in 1988 and is known as the longest continuously operating prison in Australia.

The Adelaide Gaol is one of the two oldest remaining public buildings in South Australia. The other is the Government House which was built at the same time as the Gaol.

One of the most common reasons why people believe Friday the 13th is unlucky is because of the biblical story of the Last Supper. In this story, there were 13 people at the table, including Jesus and his 12 apostles. The 13th guest was Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. The Adelaide Gaol is looking for volunteers to lead tours of this fascinating and historic site.

As a tour guide, you'll be sharing the stories of the people who lived and worked at the gaol, from the convicts and prisoners to the wardens and staff. You'll also get to learn about the gaol's history and architecture, and you'll be able to share your knowledge with visitors from all over the world.

Volunteering at the Adelaide Gaol is a fun and rewarding experience. It's a great way to learn more about South Australian history and culture, and it's a chance to meet new people and make a difference in your community.

You'll have a lot of fun!

Our experienced guides will be there to support you every step of the way and explain what each piece of equipment does and how to use it to detect paranormal activity.

If you’re a seasoned investigator with your own equipment, you’re more than welcome to bring it along. However, please note private equipment is used at your own risk.

Executed on this day in 1908 James albert coleman paid the ultimate price for the murder of constable Ring. The ex*****on was carried out in the presence of Coleman's spiritual advisor, sheriff, the governor of the Gaol, the colonial surgeon and a few members of Gaol staff. Mr Clarke (Coleman's spiritual advisor) spent time with Coleman the evening prior to the ex*****on and the morning off his ex*****on. It is said that death was instantaneous there was not the slightest movement detected after the body dropped.
To this day James albert Colemans body remains buried between the Gaol walls

On this day in 1958 Raymond John Bailey was executed at the Adelaide Gaol convicted of the sundown murders where he killed Mrs. Thyra Bowman, Wendy Bowman and Thomas Whelan along with their two pet dogs. The ex*****on was attended by the sheriff, the chief gaoler, senior police officer, chaplain, medical officer and gaol staff. Today Raymond is still buried between the walls of the Adelaide Gaol

These have been developed by the Adelaide Gaol’s original paranormal investigator, Jeff Fausch, who was the co founder of Paranormal Field Investigators. Jeff has developed and trained a team of investigators who concentrate on the large amount of phenomena occurring at the Adelaide Gaol.

These Investigations usually last for about 4 hours and we accept a maximum of 12 visitors per investigation.

Here at the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society we are always looking to give our visitors different opportunities on how to visit the Gaol.

We now offer two paranormal investigations each month led by our experienced and knowledgeable investigators. Friday nights from 9:30pm, and Saturday nights from 10:30pm.

Equipment is supplied with training you are also welcome to bring your own equipment.

John Seaver 11/3/1862

John Seaver was executed for the murder of inspector Pettinger. He was attended to by the ministers of his religion and they remained closely engaged till the time of the ex*****on, Father Russell joined in prayer and followed John onto the scaffold. The colonial surgeon stated the heart continued to beat for 10 minutes. Dr. Woodforde arrived with the coroner's jury of 14. John's body was buried in the eastern passage in the cemetery.
