Below is a letter to all members of Visit Sunshine Coast ( their tourism body) Well done for addressing the Bonza issue and encouraging engagement from tourism operators. 10|10

I'm sure you were as equally disappointed as I was to learn on Tuesday that Bonza has entered into voluntary administration.

We really do feel for those directly involved with the airline including their employees, suppliers and passengers.

We now wait for more information about the airline's future and to understand what impact that will have on the region. One thing for sure is that it’s important that this happens quickly.

It's been great to see the major airlines take the lead in easing the pressure on disrupted passengers by providing flights for those impacted, as this is an opportunity to empathise with people's changing travel plans and be flexible to those needing to rejig their travel dates.

Since their launch in 2023 Bonza has added much welcome additional air capacity for the region which, along with the other major airlines, helped us to host a record number of interstate holiday makers last year.

So it's more important than ever that we continue to work with the other airlines to bring in interstate visitors to the Sunshine Coast, and we just recently wrapped up a Jetstar campaign that sold thousands of tickets to the Sunshine Coast. Furthermore, we have a campaign with Virgin Australia launching later in May, along with tactical promotions with Webjet, Expedia and House of Travel.

Also, our hero campaign Sunshine Moments For Real goes live from next week. If you would like to get involved with this campaign, please get your deals listed on ATDW and/or join one of our cooperative marketing programs.
Reach out to [email protected] and continue reading for more information on this.

While you may have lots of questions about what comes next for Bonza, we will have to wait and see. But in the meantime, we would appreciate your assistance with keeping us up to date with any impacts your business is feeling from the cancellation of flights.

Please share this information with our Head of Industry and Trade Andrew Fairbairn on 0427 562 100 or [email protected].

Today's Tip: Avoid Misleading Words!

In tourism marketing, “accuracy is key”.
Descriptive words like "perfect," "flawless," "ideal," "spotless," and "faultless" may sound tempting, but they can set unrealistic expectations.
Remember, many factors can impact your customer's experience, such as:

- Weather: Unpredictable changes can affect outdoor activities.
- Water Visibility: Marine excursions depend on clear waters, which can be affected by tides or algae blooms.
- Personal Preferences: One person's "perfect" might not be another's.
- Seasonal Variations: Certain attractions or activities might only be available at specific times.
- Crowds: Popular destinations might be busy, affecting the overall experience.
- Travel Logistics: Transportation delays or difficulties can alter plans.
- Local Events:Unscheduled events or festivities can disrupt itineraries.

Aim for honest and accurate language to gain trust and ensure your guests have realistic expectations and enjoyable experiences.

All Whitsundays Tourism Businesses,

Recent Bonza airline cancellations have disrupted travel plans for many Whitsunday visitors. I urge you to extend full 100% refunds to travellers affected by these cancellations. By doing so, we show compassion, help avoid negative experiences, and encourage travellers to return to our beautiful region in the future.

Remember, by offering refunds, we look beyond immediate losses and focus on the long-term gain. A satisfied traveller is more likely to return, spread positive word-of-mouth, and boost our tourism industry in the long run.

Let’s work together to ensure our visitors remember the Whitsundays for its hospitality and willingness to support them in times of need.

**Whitsundays Tourism Crisis:**

The cancellation of Bonza's flights and the repossession of their aircraft is a major blow to our tourism industry, particularly at a time when we're experiencing a sharp decline in national visitors.

This setback affects local businesses and the entire community. We need to act swiftly to support our industry and remind Australians of the Whitsundays' unique offerings.

We need the regions best tourism marketers who work for tourism businesses to put their heads together to show that the Whitsundays remains a premier destination.

We can no longer rely on outdated measures and the kickbacks tourism bodies get for going to places like North America. (One of the least travelled countries into Australia)

How to get more direct bookings by using the keyword you want to rank for as a “subject “ in semantic triples for machine learning ( google)

1. Clarity and Directness in Content:

Utilizing semantic triples—subject, predicate, object—ensures that your content is not only clear but also direct. By making your main keyword the subject of sentences, you clearly communicate the most important information first. For example, if "Direct Bookings for Whitsunday boat trips " is your focus, structuring a sentence like "Direct Bookings for Whitsunday boat trips simplify planning your vacation," positions the keyword upfront, enhancing its prominence.

2. Keyword as the Subject for Enhanced SEO:

Search engines prioritize content where the main keyword is used as the subject of a sentence. This approach aligns with search algorithms that aim to match the most relevant and direct answers to user queries. By positioning your main tourism-related keywords such as "Whitsunday Tour Bookings" as the subject, you improve the SEO potential of your content, making it more likely to appear in top search results.

3. Increased User Engagement and Conversion:

Content that is engaging and easy to understand directly contributes to higher user engagement. When potential tourists read content that is straightforward and directly addresses their interests or questions, they are more likely to take action. For instance, using a call to action like "Book Your Whitsunday Tour Today and Experience Unforgettable Adventures" immediately after informative content helps convert interest into action.

4. Utilizing Semantic Richness for Broader Reach:

Expanding your content’s semantic range can capture a wider array of search queries. For example, besides focusing on "Whitsunday Tour Bookings," incorporating related terms such as "Whitsunday Adventure Trips," "Whitsunday Vacation Packages," or "Affordable Whitsunday Holidays" can attract different types of searchers, all of which can funnel into direct bookings.

5. Building Trust Through Effective Content:

High-quality, well-structured content builds trust. By clearly outlining the benefits of booking directly, such as "Best Price Guarantees," "Flexible Booking Options," or "Exclusive Whitsunday Packages," you provide value to the reader. Trustworthy content encourages visitors to book directly rather than through third-party agents, thus saving costs and building customer loyalty.

By implementing these SEO strategies focused on the effective use of semantic triples and keyword placement, tourism websites can dramatically improve their direct booking rates. This approach not only boosts search engine rankings but also enhances user experience, leading to increased engagement and conversions from potential tourists. The result is a more profitable, customer-centric online presence that leverages clarity and strategic SEO to meet business objectives.

While our international tourism has been picking up the slack from the local Aussie market that is in free fall , our region faces new challenges with the 'Tropical Dollars' campaign kicking off in Cairns and Port Douglas.
To me it’s not surprising that the Whitsundays tourism industry haven’t yet responded as a unified industry to our competitor’s promotion, as that would mean companies would have to work together to promote the region…..
What is our main Tourism body doing to help ? No idea, all I can see is happy birthday posts and work anniversaries to their own staff posted on social media ….

It’s time for a change in this region and it just may be coming ….

A quick summary of the latest report from Tourism Whitsundays shows that the Airlie Bubble has been decreasing for a year and is still in decline.

Why Tourism Whitsundays doesn't include international visitor data is a mystery ( one that I will solve by asking questions and probably upsetting those who made this report), so this report of 48% occupancy is even worse as international stats are not considered.

Whitsundays Tourism Report: February 2024 Occupancy Analysis

Summary:
February 2024 saw the Whitsundays experience an average occupancy rate of 49%, maintaining a similar level to 2021 but with a year-on-year decrease of -16%. This decrease was also reflected in a month-on-month comparison, showing a -22% decrease.

Key Findings:

Occupancy Trends: The Whitsundays experienced a decrease in occupancy compared to the previous year, likely influenced by seasonal patterns and market dynamics.

Forward Bookings: Forward bookings indicate that the lowest price bracket has the highest rate of occupancy in the upcoming months, especially during the Easter holidays, followed by the second and third highest brackets.

Length of Stay: In February 2024, the average length of stay was 4.1 days, representing a decrease of 13% compared to the previous month.

Visitor Origins: The top five local government areas for visitors were Mackay, Townsville, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Moreton Bay.

Top Visited Suburbs: Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Bowen, Cannonvale, and Proserpine were the top five suburbs visited by tourists.

While February 2024 showed a decrease in occupancy compared to previous years, there are positive signs for the Easter holidays.

26/09/2023

The Whitsundays region has been severely impacted by the Cruise Whitsundays strike in the September school holidays.

Not only has it resulted in a significant financial loss, but it has also had a major impact on word-of-mouth promotion of the Whitsundays region.

Cruise Whitsundays is the largest operator in the region, and their inability to take 800 to 1000 people per day on their tours to Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef has resulted in the loss of around 50% of holidaymakers going on tours to the Whitsundays.

This will have a significant impact on the word-of-mouth promotion of the region. According to statistics from Semrush (one of the world's most extensive online marketing programs), 78% of people rave about their favourite recent experiences to people they know at least once per week. Additionally, 88% of people had the highest level of trust in a brand when a friend or family member recommended it. Furthermore, 38% of people in Australia discover new regions and brands through word-of-mouth recommendations.

These statistics show the power of word-of-mouth promotion and its significant impact on a region. As a result of the Cruise Whitsundays strike, the Whitsundays region has lost an important opportunity to have people talk about their experiences in the area and to promote the region to their families and friends.

The region has also lost the potential to have people purchase products and services in the area due to recommendations from family and friends. The loss of word-of-mouth promotion has had a significant impact on the region and will likely continue to affect the Whitsundays in the future.

🌴 The Whitsundays Rejuvenation: A Tourist Boom Like Never Before! 🌴

As a local tourism marketer in the magnificent Whitsunday Region for over two decades, it is with immense joy and gratitude that I report a resurgence of life and energy in Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays that hasn't been seen since the 2000 Olympics.

Two Years Post-COVID 📅
In the wake of challenging times, our paradise has not only survived but is thriving in a way that we have never seen before. We are currently in what I like to call the 'Double Dipping Phase'.

🇦🇺 Domestic Surge 🇦🇺
More Australians are choosing the Whitsundays as their holiday destination than ever before. Our pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and vibrant community have welcomed Aussies from all corners of this great nation, resulting in a domestic tourism boom that is invigorating our local businesses and spirit.

✈️ International Arrival Renaissance ✈️
We are also celebrating a strong return of the international market, especially during the European holidays. Visitors from across the globe are arriving in great numbers, embracing the warmth and unrivalled beauty of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.

✨ Let us all continue to enjoy and preserve the magic of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. Here’s to a future that is as bright and dazzling as our very own Whitehaven Beach. ✨
