2023 Coral Spawn at Hardy Reef
Ohhh the little coral babies! 😍
Here is a little note from our Marine Bio Sarah - On the night of the 1st of December, we witnessed a successful coral spawning event on Hardy Reef
We were lucky enough to observe several hard coral colonies release their egg and sperm bundles out onto the reef. Once fertilized, these bundles will develop into larvae that will drift on ocean currents for several days before settling onto a new reef.
This phenomenon only happens once a year and is triggered by lunar and water temperature cues. Spawning events like these are vital to the regeneration of coral reefs, helping to ensure the health of the Great Barrier Reef through breeding the next generation of resilient corals.

Our video aims to highlight why initiatives like TRPI are crucial. They're all about getting the facts and understanding the reef's resilience, with operators visiting this magnificent underwater paradise daily! 🙌
The Tourism Reef Protection Initiative is funded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as part of the Australian Government’s Reef Protection package.
