Kiana Sail & Dive is proud to join 25 other marine tourism operators along the length and bredth of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to take part it the Tourism Reef Protection Initiative.
This Initiative has enabled our small and dedicated team to further enhance our site stewardship actions at some of our favourite dive sites, conduct #EyeontheReef monitoring surveys while continuing to control coral eating pests - such as crown of thorn starfish and drupella snails.
Kiana Sail & Dive #ExploretheUnexplored regions of the #GreatBarrierReef, discovering awe inspiring coral diversity and marine life. Our dedicated team transport our guests to the magical underwater world and share the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef through immersive educational experiences. Our passion creates a deeper understanding of the most complex and remarkable ecosystem on the planet allowing guests to develop a personal devotion, and love, for the Great Barrier Reef.
The Tourism Reef Protection Initiative is funded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority through the Australian Government's Reef Protection Package.

Spawn Spam! 🤿
Last week the team of Kiana and a few very lucky guests were fortunate enough to witness one of the most spectacular biological events on the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef! 👌
The annual Coral Spawn occurs in the days following the October and November full moons, and is known as sex on the reef! As the coral simultaneously releases sperm and eggs into the water to fertilize, they then face their biggest challenge yet, of finding a suitable substrate to lay their foundations for the future of the Great Barrier Reef
Thanks to Spawnstar Johnny Gaskell for the epic clip!

Navigating the Reef Channels
Navigating through the reef channels isn't an easy task. It takes years of experience and skills to be able to navigate safely.
Skipper Brent has spent over 20 years navigating these waters, and when you watch him in action, he is constantly aware of his surroundings, the wind, the waves and the depths of the water, he makes it look incredibly easy. Guests onboard can get involved and learn how he does it, or alternatively you can sit outside and enjoy the view.

Dolphins riding the waves
The locals showing us the way 🐬
Dolphins are a common and beautiful sight when onboard Kiana Sail and Dive. Dolphins are exquisitely good at bow-riding, able to fine-tune their body posture and position so as to be propelled along entirely by the pressure wave, often with no tail (or fluke) beats needed.
