The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors - Airlie Beach

The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors - Airlie Beach The purpose of the Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassador Program is to give each and every passenger a warm welcome to the Whitsundays.

The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors are a group of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about promoting the Whitsundays coordinated through Tourism Whitsundays. The program was established in 2004 as an initiative of the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce. Judi and Keith Dunn established and managed the program for the first 10 years. Five years ago, Brian Richardson took the reins. Recently th

e program has come to sit under the umbrella of Tourism Whitsundays

The volunteer ambassadors meet every cruise ship which anchors in the Whitsundays, they are at the forefront of welcoming passengers to Airlie Beach, providing maps, local information, answering questions and much more. The Ambassador Program started out by welcoming only 5 cruise ships in 2004. This number has increased 1,200% to welcoming 60 cruise ships in 2019. The group of loyal volunteer's have been there every step of the way ensuring our visiting cruise ship guests get a warm welcome and a wealth of local knowledge.

This week we had a lovely afternoon on a familiarisation visit with Driftwood Tours. We were shown some of the hidden gems of the Airlie Beach area that Cherene takes our cruise ship guests to.
What a treat to get the fabulous vista and photo opportunity offered by the lounge at Shute Harbour Marine Terminal. Also some hidden away spots at Shute Haven with panoramic views of the islands and a small reserve by the water in Mandalay. Even a surprise outdoor chapel - who knew! We finished the afternoon at the highest point on Seaview Drive for more amazing views and photo opportunities of Airlie Beach and Coral Sea Marina.
Thank you Cherene for sharing your extensive knowledge about the Whitsundays history, and flora and fauna. πŸ™ŒπŸ©΅

Our Story

Our dedicated group of volunteers are very passionate about promoting the Whitsundays via The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassador Program, coordinated through Tourism Whitsundays.

The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors Program was created in 2004 as an initiative of the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce. The program was established by Judi and Keith Dunn who managed the program for the first 10 years. Five years ago, Brian Richardson took the reins and recently the program has come to sit under the umbrella of Tourism Whitsundays coordinated by their Information Services Coordinator Tracey Tyler.

The sole purpose of the Cruise Ship Ambassadors is to give each and every passenger arriving by cruise ship a warm personal welcome and β€œbon voyage” on their departure.

Every Cruise Ambassador has a passion for where we live, along with what we have to offer in The Whitsundays and will take pride in telling anyone that’s prepared to listen. The Volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassador Program is unique in that, to the best of our knowledge, there is no other program such as ours that meet and greet on a one on one basis and stay to say farewell to all cruise ship passengers. We consistently have 15-20 volunteers at every event & we have fun! The Program has a number of supporters throughout the business community that see and or receive a direct or indirect benefit from the cruise ship visitors through out the Whitsundays. We appreciate all of our supporters very much and are always grateful for their support.
