Have you ever wondered what the wreck of the tug boat named Awhina at Gull Rock beach looked like before she sank?

The Tug Awhina
The Voice that Breathes o'er Eden. Black and white image from a glass plate negative of the tug, Awhina. The Awhina had a ship’s whistle with a distinctive sound. For many years of its working life this whistle (said to sound more like a siren) was used to summon on duty lumpers needed to work the hulks and bunker visiting steamers. It must have been a sound very familiar to the people of Albany (Museum of Western Australia).
The wreck of the Awhina in located just off shore at Gull Rock Beach and is a popular snorkelling spot.

If you're interested in learning more about flora and fauna along the Bibbulmun Track, have a look at some of the books in our shop!

Leigh W. Simmons' book "Naturalist on the Bibbulmun" is a great read!

Part field guide, part travelogue, part love song to the Southwest region of WA, you’ll be enchanted by his documentation of plants, animals and Noongar seasons. It is both a witness statement of the current state of the natural regions of southwestern WA, and a call to arms to protect for our future generations what little remains of one of the worlds most extraordinary natural habitats.

Middleton Beach Ellen Cove, obviously was a popular spot even as far back as 1911.

ELLEN COVE JETTY, MIDDLETON BEACH HOTEL, ALBANY | 1911.
The new hotel seen here replaced the original all-timber Esplanade Hotel, destroyed by fire on the same site in 1908. The new Esplanade, constructed in masonry, boasted all modern conveniences: a septic system, electric light, telephones and hot water! Some claimed firsts for Albany included limited undercover garage parking, a children's nursery, drawing and billiards rooms with a patrons dining room able to seat seventy people.
