✨ Throwback Thursday - Albany Town Hall ✨

Albany Town Hall was officially opened on 1 June 1888 by Mayor William Grills Knight. At the time, locating it on York Street was a bold move, as most business activity was centered on Stirling Terrace.

Built for £6,421, the two-storey granite building, designed by architects Henderson & Marryat, features stunning Victorian Free Classical revival details, including stucco decorations, patterned floor tiling, and a grand cast-iron staircase. The clock, installed in 1891, was made by William Potts of Leeds, the same makers as London’s Big Ben!

Through the years, the Town Hall has been a hub of entertainment and community life - from hosting silent films in the early 1900s to becoming an art and event space. The ground floor gallery now proudly bears the name of Carol Pettersen OAM, a Menang-Gnudju Elder.

With renovations in 2020, the Town Hall was restored to its former glory - an enduring symbol of Albany’s rich history!
