I created this page while living at Glen Helen in Central Australia - I have now moved away and I haven’t had much to do with this page for the last four years, but it still reaches a lot of people every week!

Is there anyone in the tourism business in CA that would like to use this page to its full potential to promote Central Australia for the amazingly beautiful place that it is?

13:38 Mar 05 NT Flood Watch: Western, Central and Eastern Inland Areas

Details:

NT Flood Watch: Western, Central and Eastern Inland Areas

Issued at 1:31 pm CST on Monday 5 March 2018

Flood Watch Number: 1

Flooding expected from rainfall over south eastern NT from Thursday.

A humid east to northeast airmass will combine with an upper level trough to produce widespread areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over central Australia.

Most catchments throughout this area are very dry from unseasonally low rainfall.

Heavy rainfall will initially develop over the Georgina River and southern Barkly on Wednesday, then spread westwards across the northern Simpson Desert, MacDonnell Ranges and Finke River during Thursday and Friday. Rain is expected to ease during Saturday before clearing on Sunday.

Widespread event totals from Wednesday to Saturday of 50-100 mm are expected across the northern Simpson Desert, southern Barkly, eastern MacDonnell Ranges and western Georgina river with 25-50 mm over remaining parts of the flood watch area, with isolated heavier falls to 150 mm. The heaviest falls are expected over the southern Barkly, Georgina River, northern Simpson Desert and eastern MacDonnell Ranges on Thursday and Friday.

River levels are expected to rise from their seasonal levels and may impact road conditions throughout the area. Some roads may become impassable, isolating some communities for a period of time.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Barkly
MacDonnell Ranges
Finke River and Stephenson Creek
Simpson Desert
Georgina River and Eyre Creek

☔️ RAIN ON THE ROCK ☔️

A rare, strange substance fell from the skies of Central Australia late yesterday – the first decent rain in months.

"It was overcast yesterday morning, then in the afternoon it started spitting. It got heavier at 5 o'clock and just continued after that," said Yulara resident Monica Quan.

"It's almost like a festival. All the kids are pulling out the gumboots and jumping in the puddles, and everyone's a little bit more cheerful."

The rain gauges at Yulara caught 18mL since 9am yesterday.

It's forecast to rain in Alice Springs on Saturday.

There has hardly been a drop of rain here in Central Australia since January and you can really see it... everything is very dry and very dusty! And according to the ABC some areas in Central Australia have been the driest on record - The last time we seen any real rain at Glen Helen (not just a drop or two on a windscreen) was back in January!

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, parts of Central Australia are experiencing the driest conditions on record.

The landscape around Glen Helen Gorge is nothing short of spectacular with towering sandstone walls and permanent waterhole. Base yourself at Glen Helen Homestead Lodge and explore the surrounding West MacDonnell Ranges, west of Alice Springs, including nearby spots such as Ormiston Gorge, Redbank Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole.
