Feeding, one of the very few occasions these usually raucous, yet utterly gorgeous birds, stay relatively quiet—so much so, that their gentle chatter and proficient pinecone-cracking antics were described as soothing and almost meditative by our recent Cloudy Bay Villa guests, and we couldn’t agree more.

The 'Otago'
In Kettering, the ribs of Te Rapunga are gently elevated into position while those of Otago sink slowly ever more into the mud of the Derwent.
⠀
Back in August last year, we posted about Conrad's boat 'Otago'. Joseph Conrad, Polish-British writer, continues to be lauded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. His novels centred on trials of the human spirit, which were often located in a nautical setting and reflected aspects of colonialism and empire that were prevalent at the time. At twenty-one, he first stepped onto British soil; he could only speak a few words of the language that was his to master. His early life—and later his life at sea—were to have a profound effect on his writing style and the themes that were central to his work. To Conrad, the temporal world rested on a few simple principles—the most import of which—was fidelity. It was with this exactness/truth that he imbued his works, and the foretelling of a pessimistic view of a world where man must face his own demons.

The poetry of nature and an ever-increasing connectedness to place frequently leads us to new associations that give more depth and meaning to our endeavours.
When Thoreau wrote, "where is the skilled swordsman…", he was discussing the human condition. The Journal entry was dated Feb 8, 1841 where he was beginning to organise his thoughts on nature and the idea of living deliberately—he would later spend two years living in a self-built cabin on the edge of Walden Pond. It was during this time that he wrote his first book, 'Life on the Concord & Merrimack Rivers'.
⠀
Henry Miller wrote of Thoreau, "The secret of his influence, which is still alive, still active, is a very simple one. He was a man of principle whose thought and behavior were in complete agreement. He assumed responsibility for his deeds as well as his utterances. Compromise was not in his vocabulary. America, for all her advantages, has produced only a handful of men of this caliber. The reason for it is obvious: men like Thoreau were never in agreement with the trend of the times… They took the hard road instead of the easy one. They believed in themselves first and foremost, they did not worry about what their neighbors thought of them, nor did they hesitate to defy the government when justice was at stake."
⠀
Similarly, Miller wrote to George Dibbern in June 1945 after reading Quest, “Your book is a wonderful human document, a spiritual more than a physical saga. I felt that you were a brother, and it’s as a brother that I write you and pray that you are well. All your reflections about life, about war, about people, about the Bible, impressed me deeply. So, few men think for themselves. That’s what made your book a feast.”
⠀
Henry Miller was a writer and artist who wrote semi-autobiographical novels that broke with tradition, commented on the human condition and challenged the norms of the time. ⠀

Back in 'July, 2018' we invited you to join our journey as we took up the challenge to refloat ‘Te Rapunga’.
⠀
The project is nearing completion—and as nothing immerses and harmonises better with the forces of nature than a wooden sailing boat—we would like to share some of our rebuild highlights by taking a step back to ‘May, 2020’ where the bones of the boat begin to take shape…
⠀
"This video shows the backbone components being bolted together. The components include the deadwood laminations, fore and aft stems and knees with some of the hardwood floor timbers. The centreline structure is bolted together with ½" shop-made copper bolts and roofing tar—or what’s known in the industry as blackjack—is applied between the mating surfaces."
