We just love Gibsons Steps beach on the Port Campbell National Park. There are a few steps down to the beach and you do need to check the tides and swell first before you visit, but well worth the effort. 🙂
If you are on the Great Ocean Walk, this is a great way to end your hiking adventure!
Remember, you do not need to be an expert hiker for this walk, just have a good level of fitness 🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🥾

At the end of the Great Ocean Walk, it’s pretty amazing stopping and taking in the wonderful views over the 12 Apostles.
Located in the Port Campbell National Park, these impressive limestone stacks can be visited on foot (which we recommend!) hiking from Princetown, or you can access them through the car park and kiosk area at the 12 Apostles day visitor area. 🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

If you are walking from the Gables to the 12Apostles, remember to pause at the Glenample lookout platform. It’s easy to walk past, but this is one of the best places to take a shot and celebrate a hike well done, before you head on to Gibsons Steps 🥾🥾🥾 🚶🚶‍♀️❤️🚶‍♂️🐨

Within the first hour on the Great Ocean Walk, hiking out of the trail head in Apollo Bay, you will see plenty that will make you want to just keep on walking! 🚶🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️The first section to Shelly Beach car park (approx. 8km) starts with wonderful ocean views, setting the tone for your whole journey. 🐨
Remember, you can stop at Shelly or just keep hiking the whole 104km! There are several hop on and off points however if this is a bit too far for you.
🥾Most people would tackle the whole trail in 6-7 days but you could just make a weekend of it and choose shorter walking legs.

For amazing views and wonderful rock formations try hiking the ‘wild side’ of the Great Ocean Walk.🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
Typically referred to as the section of the trail from Castle Cove or Johanna Beach to the 12 Apostles, this end of the track tends to be more isolated and more challenging than the start of the Great Ocean Walk.

These shy, spiky mammals are a delight to encounter along the Great Ocean Walk trail, especially in the quieter sections where they can be seen foraging for ants and termites.
🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
Echidnas are one of only five monotreme species in the world, meaning they lay eggs despite being mammals!
They use their long, sticky tongue to catch ants and termites.
When feeling threatened, they dig into the ground or curl into a spiky ball, making them nearly impossible for predators to attack.

Echidnas prefer areas with soft soil and dense undergrowth, so keep an eye out along the forested sections of the trail, particularly near Cape Otway and Johanna Beach. They’re most active during early morning and late afternoon, especially in warmer months.

If you see an echidna, stay quiet and still—they might continue foraging instead of hiding! Keep a respectful distance, and never try to touch or feed them.

Corellas love the Aire River on the Great Ocean Walk!
🐦🍃Often found hanging out in large flocks, they love watercourses where seeding grasses are found. Look for them in the trees on the Great Ocean Walk trail as you pass through Aire River, on the way to stunning Castle Cove beach. You will probably hear them before you see them 😄

🐨The Koala, Australian Fur Seal, Echidna and Kookaburra are all endemic and native to Australia. So to see one of these national treasures with your own eyes, the Great Ocean Walk is a great starting point; 104km of wildlife wonderland!
But if you don’t have time or inclination to complete a long or short days walk pop into or take a seal tour

Beautiful hazy mornings here at the start of the trail😀
☀️If you are starting out on the Great Ocean Walk, leave early to avoid the heat of the day. And remember, there is no drinking water on the track so take plenty of water with you on a hot day ( and maybe water purification tablets if you are walking long distances).
Enjoy! 🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🦘🐨

If you want a shady bush walk there are lots of shorter sections of trail you can enjoy, which are often the high tide alternatives of the Great Ocean Walk. 🌊
These tracks are used when the tides and ocean swells make walking on the beach unsafe. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚶🦘
Look out for decision points noted on the Great Ocean Walk Map. Enjoy!! 🗺️🧭
