Glad you had a great walk with us guys! Just love the koala shot! What a cutie 🥰 Thanks for sharing your wonderful Great Ocean Walk experience 🙂
Low tide at beautiful Apollo Bay harbour at the start of the magnificent Great Ocean Walk 😍
You may walk from here to Shelly Beach car park for an approximate 8km walk, or walk on for approximately 14kms, ending at Blanket Bay.
Either way, you need to commit as there are no other exit points so keep this in mind before you set out 🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️
Before and after! The largest dumping of seaweed we have ever seen on Apollo Bay beach after an easterly wind. Nature everchanging 😳🌊🐟🐠🦀

Our Otway summer harvest makes for some wonderfully nutritious walking food! 😍

We just love Gibsons Steps beach on the Port Campbell National Park. There are a few steps down to the beach and you do need to check the tides and swell first before you visit, but well worth the effort. 🙂
If you are on the Great Ocean Walk, this is a great way to end your hiking adventure!
Remember, you do not need to be an expert hiker for this walk, just have a good level of fitness 🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️🥾

At the end of the Great Ocean Walk, it’s pretty amazing stopping and taking in the wonderful views over the 12 Apostles.
Located in the Port Campbell National Park, these impressive limestone stacks can be visited on foot (which we recommend!) hiking from Princetown, or you can access them through the car park and kiosk area at the 12 Apostles day visitor area. 🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️ www.walk91.com.au 🐨

Magical Johanna Beach last night ❤️ Stay in the drive in campsites on the Great Ocean Walk or in the Great Ocean Walk ‘walk in’ only sites higher up the hill. Both have wonderful views! Remember you have to book through Parks Victoria.
Walk91 has a camping package where we leave a trailer for you at the campsite to access your food and camping gear if you are walking. For more info check out our website 🙂🌞⛺️www.walk91.com.au

If you are walking from the Gables to the 12Apostles, remember to pause at the Glenample lookout platform. It’s easy to walk past, but this is one of the best places to take a shot and celebrate a hike well done, before you head on to Gibsons Steps 🥾🥾🥾 🚶🚶♀️❤️🚶♂️🐨

Within the first hour on the Great Ocean Walk, hiking out of the trail head in Apollo Bay, you will see plenty that will make you want to just keep on walking! 🚶🚶♂️🚶♀️The first section to Shelly Beach car park (approx. 8km) starts with wonderful ocean views, setting the tone for your whole journey. 🐨
Remember, you can stop at Shelly or just keep hiking the whole 104km! There are several hop on and off points however if this is a bit too far for you.
🥾Most people would tackle the whole trail in 6-7 days but you could just make a weekend of it and choose shorter walking legs.

For amazing views and wonderful rock formations try hiking the ‘wild side’ of the Great Ocean Walk.🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️
Typically referred to as the section of the trail from Castle Cove or Johanna Beach to the 12 Apostles, this end of the track tends to be more isolated and more challenging than the start of the Great Ocean Walk.
🦘🐨For more information refer to the 4 Day Wild Walk or the 3 Day walk ending at the 12Apostles www.walk91.com.au

These shy, spiky mammals are a delight to encounter along the Great Ocean Walk trail, especially in the quieter sections where they can be seen foraging for ants and termites.
🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️
Echidnas are one of only five monotreme species in the world, meaning they lay eggs despite being mammals!
They use their long, sticky tongue to catch ants and termites.
When feeling threatened, they dig into the ground or curl into a spiky ball, making them nearly impossible for predators to attack.
Echidnas prefer areas with soft soil and dense undergrowth, so keep an eye out along the forested sections of the trail, particularly near Cape Otway and Johanna Beach. They’re most active during early morning and late afternoon, especially in warmer months.
If you see an echidna, stay quiet and still—they might continue foraging instead of hiding! Keep a respectful distance, and never try to touch or feed them.
Corellas love the Aire River on the Great Ocean Walk!
🐦🍃Often found hanging out in large flocks, they love watercourses where seeding grasses are found. Look for them in the trees on the Great Ocean Walk trail as you pass through Aire River, on the way to stunning Castle Cove beach. You will probably hear them before you see them 😄

🐨The Koala, Australian Fur Seal, Echidna and Kookaburra are all endemic and native to Australia. So to see one of these national treasures with your own eyes, the Great Ocean Walk is a great starting point; 104km of wildlife wonderland!
But if you don’t have time or inclination to complete a long or short days walk pop into or take a seal tour

It looks peaceful here but the Great Southern Ocean is wild and unpredictable. In 1878, 52 out of 54 lives were lost on the ‘Loch Ard’ ship with only two survivors; Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael. ⚓️
Captain Gibb attempted to turn the Loch Ard away from danger using full sails, but strong winds and current carried the ship towards the cliffs. The sails were then lowered with the anchors dropped, but the clipper still dragged across the ocean floor.
Gibb cut the anchors and raised the sails again but, as the ship began to make headway nearly clearing the cliffs, the bow struck the rock face and the ship got jammed on a shallow reef.
The yardarms smashed against the cliff face bringing pieces of mast and rock crashing onto the decks. It was impossible to launch the lifeboats with such large waves so the passengers clung to one another whilst their cabins flooded and the ship sunk into the ocean.
When the news of the wreck got back to Europe, Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael became famous and the public longed for a romantic love affair fairytale ending to the sad story, but it was not to be. 😢#walk91

If you are planning to camp in Apollo Bay before you head out on the Great Ocean Walk, the Recreation Reserve is a great spot.
Sitting right next to the river, it’s currently being renovated and it’s new face lift will make it a perfect little spot to start your Great Ocean Walk adventure. 🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️🥾🏕️⛺️
If you are lucky you might even spot a platypus here! This little fishing spot is just at the top of the campground. 🙂
When you finish walking the Great Ocean Walk trail you will be able to view the 12 Apostles from the new visitor viewing platform.
It offers great views of the wonderful limestone stacks in their full glory 🙂☀️🌅#walk91

This amazing rock stack in the Port Campbell National Park is called The Razorback.
The edges and bumps are made by ocean spray which hardens small areas of rock. The softer rock erodes away leaving an uneven surface.
The ocean carves deep smooth grooves along the sides of the stack just above sea level. With a wave hitting every 14 seconds there is a huge amount of erosion over 1000s of years.
The razorback once stretched much further out to sea but the force of the waves gradually eroded and undercut the base of the stack.
Vertical cracks in the rock, widened by the rain, caused massive blocks of rock to collapse into the sea. This leaves behind just what you can see now 😊 #walk91
