Due to a short supply of volunteers the Ravenshoe Visitor Centre is closed on Sundays until further notice.

They have a small museum about Ravenshoe, The Nganyaji Centre (museum of Jirrbal artefacts), WWII photo gallery, Driver Reviver coffee station and souvenir shop along with our brochures, maps and other information at the centre, so definitely worth a stop for visitors on the days they are open.

If you want to contribute to your community, we are activley seeking volunteers from Ravenshoe and surrounds. Call into the VIC or go online trc.qld.gov.au/volunteer and fill in an expression of interest and we will be in touch with you.

Bromfield Swamp is a shallow crater of an extinct volcano and forms part of the headwaters of the North Johnstone River.

From May to September Bromfield Swamp is a roost to a population of Sarus Cranes, elegant long-legged waterbirds that look like a large heron. There is a lookout that is a great place to see these birds as they come in to roost at dusk. You may also be lucky to see them 'dancing'

Lake Eacham
Lake Eacham is a maar—a volcanic crater formed by two massive explosions from superheating of groundwater. This vent now forms the catchment of the lake and is 65m deep. Some of the original underlying sedimentary rocks occur today as metamorphic rock outcrops in parts of the crater rim.
No streams flow into or out of the lake, with water only lost through seepage and evaporation.
The water level can fluctuate 4m between wet and dry seasons.

In 1988 Lake Eacham was included within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (WTWHA) and in 1994 joined Lake Barrine under a single protected area—Crater Lakes National Park.

Columnar Basalt - Did you know that many of the waterfalls on the Atherton Tablelands flow over such columns! - especially well known are Millaa Millaa Falls and Millstream Falls. Cooling also may result in horizontal cracking, resulting in steps of columns.
The Malanda Falls has lava above the falls (easily visible from the bridge despite the grass) that is split into really large columns about a meter in diameter. This shows the lava was cooled more slowly, than at other waterfalls in the area.

On the side of the road across from the Malanda Falls Visitor Centre you might see Millaa Millaa vine (malaymalay) fruits … these are good to eat when red (ripe). The skin is a bit astringent (puckering up the mouth like a green banana) but the flesh around the seed is sweet and tasty. You may have noticed the town of Millaa Millaa is thought to be named for this large rainforest vine.

The wet season is a great time to look at the huge variety of fungal species that produce fruiting bodies now. Pictured are a variety of Xylaria (similar to a variety called Dead Man’s Fingers).

At the Malanda Falls Conservation Park be on the look out for small Scented Daphne trees.
They flower and fruit from the trunk, and there are many green fruit at the moment. It won’t be long before they become a bright pink, giving the tree an amazing look. It’s flowers and fruit have made it a popular garden plant. Also flowering and fruiting (red, elongate) is Red Boat Tree

Lucky people saw two Tree-kangaroos at Malanda Falls today, Sunday 2 February.

Maybe you will be lucky if you come for a walk, but no swimming as the falls are still flooded.

As you walk through the Malanda Falls Conservation Park, around Lake Eacham, or any of the other rainforest walks keep an eye out for fungi. The first rains have finally brought the fungi to life, and they are starting to produce fruiting bodies. The colony of mushrooms shown below the bracket fungus is Soldier Pore Fungus.
Slime moulds also show up in the wet season. Once thought to be fungi, they are in a different kingdom – a very strange life form.

In Malanda Falls Conservation Park you can look for the red and yellow flowers on the forest floor of legume Black Bean (ganyjuu). These are followed by large wooden pods with large seeds. The seeds were an important food source for Ngadjan people, after considerable processing to remove poisons.
