We have been asked by the City of Rockingham to remind our parents and community that stopping is not allowed on the paved verges on Stillwater Drive & Avoca Chase. Stopping in these areas is illegal and you may be fined. Children have been walking behind cars to cross the road creating a potentially dangerous situation.

The parking ranger has been notified and is expected to be attending mornings and afternoons.

For the safety of our children, please refrain from stopping in these areas. There is plenty of parking available in the large car park off Avoca Chase.

There was an incident at the crossing at Stillwater & Baldivis Road yesterday. One of our students was hit by a vehicle that failed to stop when the attendant had the flags out. The vehicle was also going at a dangerous speed. The student does not have any major injuries but is not at school today.

Traffic wardens also noticed an alarming increase in the speed of many vehicles passing through the crossings, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times creating a dangerous situation.

Please remember that the speed limit in school zones is 40km per hour 7:30am - 9am and 2:30pm - 4 pm

Young Achievers Club 2024

During Semester 2, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 3 to 6 participated in the Young Achievers Club facilitated by the Institute of Indigenous Wellbeing & Sport. This program was introduced at Rivergums Primary School to strengthen cultural connections and support the health, social, and emotional wellbeing of our First Nations students.

In Term 3, the focus was on traditional symbols. Students used these symbols to design their Karlup, a personal artwork symbolizing themselves at the center and extending out to represent their loved ones, interests, experiences, and the elements they value in their community and environment. The students proudly shared their beautifully crafted Karlups with the group.

In Term 4, the students explored Noongar language and learned about local native flora and fauna. They were captivated by Dreamtime stories that highlighted the cultural significance of native plants and their role in the survival of First Nations people. During Week 8, the YAC students hosted a Danjoo Boodja Koorliny—a nature walk around the school—inviting friends along to share their knowledge about trees, traditional medicines, and fascinating facts about the natural world.

Each session concluded with a game of Noongar-inspired dodgeball or other cultural activities. A standout favorite was the spirited game of Fish & Hunters, which became highly competitive and much loved by the students.

We extend our gratitude to Richie, Leeka, and the IIWS team for providing such meaningful and enriching experiences. Our students eagerly look forward to continuing their journey with YAC in 2025 and deepening their connection to their culture and heritage.

Good morning Parents and Caregivers,

As parents and caregivers, it's important to have open and honest conversations with your children about safety. Here’s a quick reminder to talk to your kids about "Stranger Danger"

Here are some suggestions to help your children stay safe:
· always travel in a group
· walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
· wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
· stay in areas that are well lit
· stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
· be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
· if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
· if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
· run from a situation if you feel at risk
· give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
· report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
· if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
· report number plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.

You can call 13 14 44 to report an incident to WA Police (only use 000 in an emergency) or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.

To get the latest community safety information from police, visit WA Police on Facebook www.facebook.com/WA.Police or online at www.police.wa.gov.au.
