and conference events. My name is Sue Collins, I am a Leura Local who is proud to bring my love of the Blue Mountains to visitors. During the COVID lockdowns I took the opportunity to invest in my passion for Australian history with my two foundation tours, The Leura Story Walking Tour, and the Katoomb

a Story Walking Tour. This process has taught me to appreciate my village and how fortunate I am to call Leura home. Mountains Tales has grown to offer coach commentary tours for a variety of groups coming to the Blue Mountains; whether conference and events, social groups, or educational tours, I draw on my previous work experience to deliver the best experience for my groups. Having worked in Sydney in the corporate arena in Sales and HR, I understand what goes into a successful corporate getaway; time to chill, form connections, learn and have fun and laughter along the way. My private Social Group Day Trips are always full of laughter, no matter how many times you have visited the Blue Mountains, there are many stories to learn and enjoy, making for a memorable daytrip. My Educational Tours take me back to my childhood, as I learned the colonial stories of Sydney, and my family connection to our not-so distant past. Learning is achieved through storytelling and role play with the spectacular Blue Mountains as our classroom. During my tours I share the stories of the Blue Mountains, and a little of myself. My love for community; as a SES volunteer I enjoy giving back to my community in times of need, I am the coordinator of ANZAC Day services in Leura and involved in both Leura and Blue Mountains heritage committees. As a qualified adult educator, I know my guests will gain a better knowledge and understanding of the Blue Mountains. The ambulance driver was Bill Davis, driving his Dodge Commercial Panel Van to the to the newly opened hospital.

When the hospital opened there were 22 beds. These were divided between gendered public wards, some private accommodation, and an isolation ward.

The Hospital is a memorial after the Great War, with memorial tablets recording the names of 139 local soldiers who were killed in WWI.

I love this image of the Giant Stairway at Echo Point, it demonstrates what a difficult task it was to complete. The stairway is the legacy of Ranger James McKay who started the work in 1916, but by 1918. when only a quarter of the stairs had been completed, it was deemed too costly and the plan was shut down.

In the 1930's the plan was resurrected, with ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ– ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฌ completed to travel the 300 metres down. The stairway opened in October 1932, with newspapers regarding it as a "triumph of nerve and skill"

A controversial site in Katoomba's history. The Catalina Motor Racing Circuit opened in 1961 and used by many different types of motor vehicles, from touring cars to motorcycles. The track's final lap was in 2001, with the site dedicated as ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐†๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐€๐›๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž in 2002.

Today is is a quite place of reflection, for all of us to visit.

Opening in December 1929, this art deco hotel offered a swimming pool, tennis court, 9 hole golf course and of course their famous sprung dancefloor, for evening entertainment.

In 1949 the RAAF purchased the hotel and turned it into the Headquarters for Operational Command, and the sprung dancefloor is now the officers dining room!

This cement rendered archway was the entrance to the most popular walk in the Blue Mountains - The Prince Henry Cliff Walk from Echo Point to Katoomba Falls. Those familiar with the area will be familiar with the background.

The walk opened on 20 October 1934, and was extended towards Leura in 1936.

๐’๐จ ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐ง๐ซ๐ฒ? The Duke of Gloucester (sone of King George V) who stopped at Katoomba Railway station to shake some hands in August 1934. He never saw the walk or view that we enjoy from his namesake walk.

In 1948 an iron anvil was donated to the site by Blackheath holiday maker.
In the 1970's the anvil was pushed over the cliff, and lost to time.
In 2005 the NSW Police Rescue found the anvil and retrieved it from the valley floor.
The original anvil was reinstated in 2008.

From the Cooee March website : This great quality photograph of the Coo-ees lined up outside the Royal Hotel at Hartley on Thursday morning, 4th November 1915, shows them standing at attention, wearing their new white hats and blue dungarees that they had been issued with at Lithgow, ready to set off on the Great Western Road to Mount Victoria.

The Royal Hotel building is still there and now an office for the NSW National Parks.

This photo is one of my favourite Harry Phillips photos. The hikers are wearing heavy rain jackets and some are carrying umbrellas. Just down from were the hikers are standing is weeping rock, a very popular photo stop of this period.

You may recognise this image from the side of the Commonwealth Bank in Katoomba.

๐ƒ๐ˆ๐ƒ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐Š๐๐Ž๐–: Mitchells Ridge Lookout to the west of Mt Victoria was named after the Surveyor General who "discovered" a means to exit the Blue Mountains in 1830, this would then lead to Victoria Pass. Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell.

The lookout was opened by NSW Premier Jim Dooley in November 1921, with the timber archway established in 1932.

From the Lookout there are great views down over the Kanimbla Valley and the Victoria Pass. Worth a stop the next time you are travelling west. ๐–๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ฃ๐จ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ฐ?

๐ƒ๐ˆ๐ƒ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐Š๐๐Ž๐–: The convict built bridge on Victoria Pass opened in 1832. It has been known by a number of names "The Convict Causeway", "Mitchell's Bridge", "The Victoria Pass Viaduct" and "The Victoria Pass Causeway"

The curved stone wall is 97m long on the uphill and 30 m long on the downhill.

In March this year the causeway was Heritage listed by NSW Heritage. The listing reads "The Victoria Pass Causeway is an outstanding example of the techniques, standards and practice of road engineering in the colony"

I love this NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service sign that explains the evolution of the Blue Mountains landscape.

Talk about history being everywhere, you can see the erosion occurring today, most recently with the Jamison valley landslide that has closed the Federal Pass.

The hotel had been opened in 1891 by Joseph Tolls. Offering all the glamour available at the time including drawing and dining rooms, sitting rooms, reading and writing rooms. It was said the Mr Tolls motto was "comfort as well as elegance"

A sad loss to the Wentworth Falls when fire gutted the iconic building.

The Valley was named after ๐‹๐ข๐ž๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐†๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ซ ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ฌ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž, who was the commander of the NSW Corps. Our first Governor, Phillips, was ill and returned to Britain in 1792, leaving Grose as Temporary Governor (Lieutenant Governor) until Governor Hunter arrived in 1795.

In 1793, Grose sent William Paterson on an expedition to find a navigable route through the Blue Mountains, off the Nepean-Hawkesbury River.

The Lapstone Zig Zag walk is a 900m one way accessible walk, along the old railway line. This is a great walk at the base of the Blue Mountains, through our early history, you can still see the drill holes on the sandstone walls.
