Sky Gypsies Bright, beautiful, natural handcrafted items from Nepal. Sky Gypsies

We’re Lucy & David …… flyers, travellers, traders…..

We met one summer at a paragliding takeoff in the French Alps, flew together and dreamt of a life where we could follow our passions and live the lives we really wanted. Ten years later and our lives are, literally, half a world away from there. There have been many adventures, 2 babies and a fledgling business to bring us to our today. We’re melding our passions and priorities to bring you produc

ts you’ll love, that we are proud to sell, which we source in countries we love to visit…… from artisans forging their own paths, keeping traditional crafts alive, trading on their terms. We believe small things can make a big difference…

The colours in a hand-woven cloth, the cut of a bag…
The appreciation of the care and energy that went into their creation
The small order for a supplier that turns into a bigger one. Shared laughter over a cup of tea (In Nepal, India, Australia, anywhere anyone drinks tea)
Noticing the sunlight in the trees. Sky Gypsies is our company – we want you to soar free, to go where the wind takes you, follow your own path. We hope our products will continue their journey with you and brighten your adventures.

Do you like a bobble on your beanie? I’ve got all sorts to choose from but it does seem to me that in general the guys are less keen on the pompom. If you want to challenge my stereo types, and maybe your own bobble prejudices.. come for a beanie try on session this weekend!

It’s 30 years ago this year that I 1st went to Nepal, aged 18. It’s not exaggerating to say that it totally changed the course of my life. I lived for 6 months in Solu, the lower district of the Everest Region, teaching English. It was 3 days walk from the nearest road. My students were the children of blacksmiths, normally excluded from the local school as untouchable. They were cheerful and brilliant and very, very poor. They taught me more about life than I could ever hope to teach them. Their lives were and would be hard - full of discrimination as untouchables and dangerous manual labour. I hope they felt the love and admiration we had for them. We were only about 10 years older than most of them and it’s so strange to think of them as nearing 40 now. I often wonder about where and how they are now.
Life in Nepal is both beautiful and hard. It’s important for me to give back to this place that has given me so much. We make a regular monthly donation to a wonderful organisation in the west of Nepal. They have a childrens home and an amazing school at Kopila Valley providing security, love and child focused education to as many kids as they can.

Here’s a few photos from 1995!

🎶Singing and dancing at school
🏔️The view of Numbar at the end of the valley.
✏️The school at Thateng. It was half an hour walk straight up from where we lived. The 1st day we thought we would die. We got much fitter, walking about 2 hours a day.
📷 School photo. There were 2 classes. Two Nepali teachers Sara and Ratna and me and my friend Cara.
🔡 Cara with class 2, and the monster collage we all made to learn colours, numbers and body parts.
🚿The stream where we washed and did our laundry. No showers.
🥭The local saturaday market in Naya bazaar. People walked for many hours carrying their produce to sell.. Mango season was amazing.
💌🚁Post came by helicopter once a week at best, less in the monsoon. There was one phone in the village half an hour walk away.
🎭 A local festival in the street we lived on.

What’s an experience that changed your life?

I was reminded what a pretty colour this cornflower / sky blue is when we did our photoshoot on Monday. Soft and pretty and summery.
This is the Lucy sundress, still a good one with this hot weather going on and on. Adjustable straps, soft shirted elastic for an easy fit, flattering A line shape and of course, pockets.

Swipe to see all the colours. Which would you choose?

I’m thinking about our next photoshoot scheduled for next week and I’ve got sunshine on my mind ☀️. I’m thinking of all the yellow props I can bring along 🌻⛱️🍋🛵(if only I had a little yellow Vespa!).
In the meantime these sunny yellows from our last shot can’t help but make you smile. You can find them all online too.

It seemed impossible a couple of weeks ago but hints of autumn are creeping in and I’m starting to think of the crisp sunny days that brings here in the mountains.
I look forward to reaching for some different clothes, a bit more weight, darker colours.
Our traveller wrap skirts hang beautifully, with eyecatching prints, embroidery on some and a fabulous adjustable waist..,… just wrap and snap to your size.

Add some pop to your outfit with one of our cotton and leather bags. Made to last, with plenty of pockets, there’s lots of different colours and hopefully the size for you.

What do you always have in your bag? I have to be able to fit my phone, sunnies, purse and, these days, reading glasses! And I like to have space to fit a book too… one to read or to write in. So a pen or two too.

Wow that was a busy long weekend, I’m still recovering today. So good to see so many people out and about enjoying the long weekend.
Let’s do it all again this week. It’s my Violet town on Saturday. If you’re always meaning to get to this one I reckon the November market is the best of the year as there are always so many stalls in the run up to Christmas and it’s not yet too hot (although it’s giving it a good go)!
Sunday is back in Bright at the Rod Run market.

It’s going to be a busy one and I’m excited. Will I see you there?

It’s the 1st Bright Twilight market tonight down at the Brewery. Market stalls, beer, music and food. A pretty good combo I reckon and a great way to start summer. Thankfully it’s not as hot today (nor stormy!).
We’ll be there with all our felt decorations and gifts.

Well that was a long break!
I’m back, it’s Market season and I love being out and about meeting you all. It makes me happy and I hope it makes you happy to see all the fun things in the stall.
How are gorgeous are these felt ball wreaths and rainbow alphabets. They’re both online now and I’ll be adding more felts over the next few weeks.
See you out there / in here.
